INTRODUCTION
Pavements are required for the smooth, safe and systematic passage of traffic.
Pavements are generally classified as flexible and rigid pavements. Flexible
pavements are those which have low flexural strength and are flexible in their
structural action under loads. Rigid pavements are those which possess note worthy
flexural strength and flexural rigidity.
Flexible pavements are preferred over cement concrete roads as they have a great
advantage that these can be strengthened and improved in stages with the growth of
traffic and also their surfaces can be milled and recycled for rehabilitation. The
flexible pavements are less expensive also with regard to initial investment and
maintenance. Although Rigid pavement is expensive but have less maintenance and
good design life.
In the project report, an attempt is made to design a service road at Aiginia square,
based on the principles of pavement design. On the existing alignment of the road,
soil samples are collected for the determination of soil characteristics like
consistency limits, sieve analysis, C.B.R. values etc.., Based on this the thickness of
the flexible pavement is designed.
LITERATURE REVIEW
Serial no. Author Year Key findings

1 Prof. Varsha 2017 Stated that the quantity of base course and sub-base material is properly
Lanjewar given by California bearing ratio method. The CBR method of pavement
design gives the total thickness requirement of the
pavement above a subgrade. The CBR method performs on soil sample
is based on the strength parameter of subgrade soil and subsequent
pavement material.
2 Shital H. Jadhav 2016 Stated that Highway planning and pavement design plays an important
role in day to day life. Generally thickness calculation of flexible
pavement is done by comparing various design methods such as, Group
Index method (GI), California Bearing Ratio method (CBR), Indian
Road Congress method (IRC). From this design method maximum
thickness is adopted for construction of flexible pavement.
3 Mr. Gowtham 2015 A B.tech project on “DESIGN OF A FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT FOR AN
Kumar Katta EXISTING COLONY” . In this project an attempt is made to design a
model road for a newly built up colony based on the modern principles
of pavement design. soil samples are collected for the determination of
soil characteristics like consistency limits, sieve analysis, C.B.R values,
etc. Based on this, the thickness of the pavement (flexible) is designed.
OBJECTIVES
The main objectives of this design project are:
• To design a pavement that meets the required design life, based on the
subgrade strength, traffic loading and environmental factors and
including the selection of appropriate materials for subgrade, sub base,
base and wearing surface.
• To calculate and classify the loadings of the various vehicles that uses
the current road facility.
• To evaluate the potential advantages and disadvantages of pavement
alternatives.
DESIGN CRITERIA
The flexible pavements has been modeled as a three layer structure and stresses and
strains at critical locations have been computed using the linear elastic model. To
give proper consideration to the aspects of performance, the following three types of
pavement distress resulting from repeated (cyclic) application of traffic loads are
considered:
1. vertical compressive strain at the top of the sub-grade which can cause sub-grade
deformation resulting in permanent deformation at the pavement surface.
2. horizontal tensile strain or stress at the bottom of the bituminous layer which can
cause fracture of the bituminous layer.
3. pavement deformation within the bituminous layer.
While the permanent deformation within the bituminous layer can be controlled by
meeting the mix design requirements, thickness of granular and bituminous layers
are selected using the analytical design approach so that strains at the critical points
are within the allowable limits.
