Introduction

 A DLR network is a single-point fault tolerant ring network.

 Products with EtherNet/IP embedded switch technology have two ports
 Currently Rockwell supports up to 50 nodes max and up to 100 meters
between devices.

Star Topology
 Advantage: most efficient with bandwidth, little impact if device is
disconnected
 Disadvantage: more wiring and switches needed

PUBLIC Copyright © 2015 Rockwell Automation, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 6

Linear Device-Level Topology
 Advantage: minimal wiring, no external Ethernet switches required
 Disadvantage: tolerance for media and equipment faults is low

PUBLIC Copyright © 2015 Rockwell Automation, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 7

Ring Topology
 Advantage: resilient connectivity, fast recovery rate
 Disadvantage: configuration required

Device-Level Ring Topology
 DLR is a layer 2 protocol that provides link-level, physical redundancy
 In a DLR network it is assumed that all nodes have at least two Ethernet
ports as well as embedded switch technology
 The Embedded Switch Technology implements Ethernet switch features in
your hardware to support high performance applications
 Embedded switch technology incorporates a three-port switch
 Network traffic is managed to ensure timely delivery of critical data (QoS,
IGMP supported)
 Quality of Service (QoS):
 Provides prioritization of some packets at the expense of others
 The key to QoS is the policy that is being enforced

Device-Level Ring Topology
 1588 PTP support ensures tight synchronization for motion and CIP Sync
applications.

 Non-DLR devices may also be included with a device that has ring
capabilities.

 A DLR network is a single-point fault tolerant network.

 Network still functions if there is a single break on a network
 Better fault tolerance over normal star topology

Device Level Ring Topology
 A Device Level Ring is made up of Ring Supervisor and Ring Nodes:
 Ring Supervisor Node
 A DLR network requires at least one node to be configured as ring supervisor.
 Back-up Supervisor Nodes are optional – we recommend that you configure at
least one back up supervisor for you network.
 With multiple Ring Supervisors in the system it will use precedence values to
determine the active Ring Supervisor.

Device Level Ring Topology
 A Device Level Ring (cont);
 Ring Node
 Any node that operates on the network to process data.
 Ring nodes can report fault locations

PUBLIC Copyright © 2015 Rockwell Automation, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 15

Device-Level Ring Topology
 Supervisor blocks incoming traffic on one port
 Sends Beacon frames on both ports to detect break in the ring
 The active ring supervisor is charged with verifying the integrity of the ring

PUBLIC Copyright © 2015 Rockwell Automation, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 16

Device-Level Ring Topology
 Beacon interval is how often the supervisor sends a beacon on the network
 Default is 400 micro seconds
 Beacon timeout is how long the supervisor will wait to see return

PUBLIC Copyright © 2015 Rockwell Automation, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 17

Device-Level Ring Topology
 After failure detection, ring supervisor unblocks blocked port
 Network configuration is now a linear topology
 Fault location is readily available via diagnostics

PUBLIC Copyright © 2015 Rockwell Automation, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 18

Device-Level Ring Topology
 Link Failure which can consist of a broken or missing cable
 All faults that are detectable at physical layer
 Physical layer failure detected by protocol-aware node
 Status message sent by ring node and received by ring supervisor

PUBLIC Copyright © 2015 Rockwell Automation, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 19

Device-Level Ring Topology
 Once ring is restored, supervisor hears beacons on both ports, and
transitions to normal ring mode, blocking one port

PUBLIC Copyright © 2015 Rockwell Automation, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 20

Device-Level Ring Topology
 You can obtain network diagnostic information programmatically via MSG
 Request all ring diagnostic information
 Request a ring participant list
 Request the active supervisor information
 Clear rapid ring faults
 Verify a fault location
 Reset a fault counter
 Enable and configure a ring supervisor
 Initiate the Restart_Sign_On service

Device-Level Ring Topology
 Create a MSG instruction to retrieve ring diagnostic information
 Make sure destination tag is correct size to retrieve data you want
 Example below is to retrieve all ring diagnostic’s
 See also Literature Library, Embedded Switch Technology, RA
Publication ENET-AP005

Guidelines and Fault Recovery
 Use fewer then 50 nodes on a single DLR network
 Configure multiple supervisor nodes per ring
 Do not physically close a DLR network without a Supervisor configured on
the network
 Use default values for Beacon Interval, Beacon Timeout, and Ring Protocol
VLAN ID.
 These default values are optimized for the following configuration
 50 or fewer nodes
 All nodes at 100Mbps/ full-duplex
 50% of the network traffic bandwidth being Ethernet/IP traffic

PUBLIC Copyright © 2015 Rockwell Automation, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 24

Guidelines and Fault Recovery
 DLR supervisor reports a Rapid Ring Fault
 5 disconnections / reconnections of a node with in 30 seconds
 A duplex mismatch between devices
 Electromagnetic noise on the network
 Unstable physical connections
 The supervisor will turn off port 2 and remain in that state even after the
actual fault is no longer present.
 Per ODVA standards the network with a Rapid Ring Fault cannot function
properly

PUBLIC Copyright © 2015 Rockwell Automation, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 25

Guidelines and Fault Recovery
 You can clear the rapid ring fault programmatically with a CIP generic
message instruction.

PUBLIC Copyright © 2015 Rockwell Automation, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 26

Guidelines and Fault Recovery
 You can clear the rapid ring fault in the software graphical interface by
clicking Clear Fault
