Problem 1

A blower operating at 15,000

rpm compresses air from 68℉
and 14.7 psia to 10psig. The
design flow is a 1350 CFM and at
this point, Bhp is 80 hp.
Determine the blower efficiency
at the design point; k = 1.395.

• Discussion :

Over all blowing efficiency is unknown

in the problem. Given the value of k, actual
work can be solved since all the needed
parameters were given. This can be done
through direct substitution. Since there is no
value of Nad, therefore No=Nm. Using the
formula, over all blower efficiency can be
solved by just dividing the actual work to the
given power input.
Problem 2
A centrifugal blower is designed to
m 3
draw 28 ൗmin of carbon dioxide at 32 ℃
and 21 kPa gage and compresses it to 35
kPa gage when operating at 4000 rpm. It is
to be tested with air at 101.325 kPaa and
21℃ and driven by a motor running at 3550
rpm. Determine the flow which the machine
should deliver at design point on test to be
acceptable. Overall blower efficiency is 70%.
• Given:

N1 = 4000rpm
N2 = 3550 rpm
m 3
Q1 = 28 ൗmin
P1 = 21 kPag
P2 = 35 kpag

• Discussion :
In this problem, flow rate and break
horsepower of the machine should deliver at
a design point that were acceptable are
unknown. There is a change in speed so
flow rate can be solved through affinity law.
And BHP can be solved by solving first the
actual work. Actual work can be solved
through direct substitution since there is a
change in pressure. After solving the value
of actual work, it is then divided to the given
blower efficiency. Bhp is now obtained.
Problem 2

Same as problem 9, calculate

the Bhp which the machine
should deliver at design point on
test to be acceptable.
• Given:

N1 = 4000rpm
N2 = 3550 rpm
m 3
Q1 = 28 ൗmin
P1 = 21 kPag
P2 = 35 kpag

In this problem, flow rate and break

a design point that were acceptable are
unknown. There is a change in speed so
flow rate can be solved through affinity law.
And BHP can be solved through actual work
formula. Actual work can be solved through
direct substitution since there is a change in
pressure. The value of flow rate to be used
is the new value of Q solved through affinity
law. Then, Bhp is now obtained.
