HOW TO REPAIR HOLES IN
HVAC DUCTS
 STEPS
 Wash the duct area where the hole is
using a soapy dishwater solution in a
bucket and a rag. You must wash the
entire circumference of the duct to be
repaired and rinse it thoroughly when
finished. Allow the duct to completely
dry.
 Pull about 6 inches of Underwriters
Laboratory 181 Approved aluminum
sealing tape off of the spool. This can be
found at home and garden stores, HVAC
shops and hardware stores. Then pull the
wax paper backing from the tape.
 Begin taping a few inches above the
hole. As you use the original 6 inches,
pull, out another 6 inches of tape,
remove the wax-paper backing and
continue wrapping around the duct.
Slightly overlap each edge of the tape
with each pass.
 Make at least three passes over the hole
as you wrap the duct. This will overlap
each edge one time. Press the tape
down firmly with a putty knife, after each
pass, to ensure a solid, air-tight seal.
 Cut the tape when the hole is wrapped
using a pair of scissors. Dispose of the
wax-paper backing when finished.
THINGS YOU WILL NEED

 Aluminum tape, Underwriters Laboratories 181

Approved
 Putty knife
 Mastic
 Soapy dishwater solution
 Bucket
 Rag
 Clean water
 Scissors
 Sheet metal patch
 Self-tapping sheet metal screws
 Drill with appropriate driver bit
 Sheet metal shears
TIP
 There are several widths of tape to choose from.
Two-inch, 3-inch and 4-inch widths are common.
Choose the width that easily covers the hole with
one pass.
 A thin sheet metal patch can also be cut to fit the
hole with sheet metal shears. The patch is screwed
into place with self-tapping sheet metal screws, and
then mastic is applied along the edges to ensure an
airtight seal.
 For smaller holes, apply mastic like caulk. Push
some mastic directly into the hole for a quick and
easy seal.
WARNING
 Sheet metal edges are sharp. When
handling sheet metal, always wear
leather palm gloves.

 Ducted gas heating systems are
traditionally the most common form of
whole-of-home gas heating.
 These systems draw air from inside the
home through a heat exchanger for rapid
warming and distribution through outlets
in the floor or ceiling
FEATURES

Highly efficient

Cost effective

Requires little maintenance

Uses natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)
WHAT DO THE SYSTEMS
CONSIST OF?
 A furnace fueled by natural gas or LPG.
Air is drawn in by a fan, and passed over
a heat exchanger to warm it. The
furnace is usually installed in the roof
space or externally, but CAN also be
placed under the floor or even in internal
cupboards if space is limited.
 Ducting distributes the heated air
through the home. It is usually laid
above the ceiling or under the floor, but
can be placed between floors or in other
cavities, depending on available room.
 Registers (also called ‘outlets’ or ‘vents’),
attached to the floor or ceiling, or sometimes
the wall, direct warm air into rooms. Provided
ceiling registers are correctly positioned, and
of appropriate design, they will provide a
similar heating effectiveness to floor
registers. Floor registers are usually located
near outside walls to allow heat to fully flow
back through the house to the return air
grille. Ceiling registers should be located
centrally in a room, or between the center
and external walls.
 A return air vent (grille) recirculates air
to the furnace, beginning the cycle
again. The grille should be located at or
near floor level or in ceiling or roof.
