How do we take action?

IB PYPx = active citizens who take action

- show understanding
- apply knowledge and skills
- to reflect
- make a contribution to a cause or
stimulate positive change
In the PYP:
education = intellectual + socially
responsible attitudes + thoughtful and
appropriate action

PYP expectation:
successful inquiry -> responsible action
initiated by the student as a result of the
learning process
grand or extravagant ≠ effective action
It begins with the most basic:
- with the self
- within the family
- within the classroom, the hallways and
the playground
Four forms of action:
- direct action
- indirect action
- advocacy
- research for action
As adults, we provide appropriate
support.

Self-reflection is the best

evaluation for action.
What is the role of parents/guardians?
 Small group fieldtrips
 assist students in identifying places to visit
and people to interview
 help set-up fieldtrips
 make sure the students are accompanied by
an adult

 Find out if it is possible for speakers to come to

school instead of the students going to them.
What is the role of parents/guardians?
 Keep them on track.
 Remind students to be on task.
 Ask follow-up questions at home.
 Have informal chats with your child about:
 progress of their inquiry
 problems they face and how they can be
solved
 how they can help (suggest options and
not definite solutions)
 motivate and encourage
How do we communicate with parents?

 Please course all your concerns

through your child’s homeroom teacher.
 Assemblies/meetings
 Letters
 Discussion to entertain questions
