INTRODUCTON SEGMENT

 Explosive Welding is one of the finest welding processes known

for its capability of joining the two metal plates with similar or
dissimilar metallurgical properties which cannot be joined by any
other conventional manufacture process.
explosive welding is solid state welding process .which uses a
controlled explosive detonation to force two metal together at
high pressure. that resultant composite system is joined with a
durable.
The bond is formed due to the high- velocity oblique impact,
and this impact helps in jetting action. Jetting is the process
which plays a very vital role in joining of the metals plate,
PRINCIPLE OF WELDING
IN EXPLOSIVE
 in this solid state joining process. when the explosive
detonated on the surface of metal. a high pressure pulse
generated. this pulse propel the metal at high speed .if
this piece of metal collide at angle with another piece of
metal, welding may occur.
In this jetting action need at the collision interface. This
jet is product of two metal collide
 Cladder metal can be placed parallel or inclined to the
base plate
Explosive material is distributed over top of cladder
metal
“STAND OFF
DISTANCE” ‘DISTANCE
BETWEEN CLADDER
methodlogy AND BASE PLATE
BEFORE EXPLOSION’
Standard test
Sl no test Standard test
1 Ultra sonic inspection ASTM A 578
2 Bond shear strength ASTM A 26
3 Ram tensile test MIL-J-24445
4 Drop weight test ASTM E20S-66T
Application

To produce high strength weld between

niobium and 6061- T651 Aluminium .
 Joining of dissimilar metals, e.g. steel to
aluminium .
. Joining of similar metals, e.g. Aluminium to
aluminium .
 Light weight metal sheets.
Can weld large areas of metal.
Joining of pipes and tubes.
Ship building industry , cryogenics industry etc.
Benefit and limitation
 Can bond many  The geometrics weld
dissimilar ,normally must be simple like flat,
Unweldable metals. conical.
 Ease of process  Need safe to operator
 Enlarge surface can be due to Noise and blast
bond occur.
 No affect on parents  The metal must have
properties high impact resistance.
 Small quantity of
explosive use.
Conclusion

 What we learnt over here, Limitation was the metal

must be ductile enough to undergo the deformation
without cracking, A notch toughness of value above
30 J at bonding temperature . Advantages were no heat
affected zone (HAZ), No diffusion, retain the
properties of the parent material, only minor melting
