Essential Newborn Care: First 30
Seconds
• Call out time of birth
• Dry the baby (first 5 seconds)
– Clean, dry cloth  dry the baby
– Wipe the eyes, face, head, front, back, arms, legs
– Check breathing while drying
• Remove wet cloth  skin to skin contact
• Cover with a clean warm cloth
• Cover the baby’s head with a bonnet
Immediate Newborn Care: 30 Seconds
– 3 Minutes
• Gasping/not  Breathing/crying (1)  Continue skin
breathing  positive to skin contact
pressure ventilation  Avoid manipulation (routine suctioning)
– Call for help + postpone routine procedures
– Clamp + cut the cord (weighing + measurements)
– Warm + firm surface  Skin to skin contact with the baby prone
– Inform the mother on the mother’s abdomen or chest +
turn the baby’s head to one side
– Start ventilation 
Algorithm for  Covering with a blanket (back) and
resuscitation bonnet (head)
Immediate Newborn Care: 30 Seconds

 Breathing/crying (2)
 Inject oxytocin (arm/thigh)

 Assist with multiple birth (deliver the next baby)

 Do appropriately timed cord clamping and cutting

(after cord pulsations have stopped between 1-3


minutes)

 Baby on mother’s chest positioning and attachment

 Erythromycin/tetracycline ointment, or 2,5% povidone-iodine drops
(both eyes)
 Provide additional care for a small baby (or twin)
 For a visibly small baby or a baby born >1 month early:

 Skin to skin contact

 Extra blankets  keep the baby warm

 Don’t bathe the baby

 Hygiene (wiping with a damp cloth, but only after 24h)

 Prepare for referral  baby (<1500 g or born >2 months early)
