Discovering Computers 2016

Tools, Apps, Devices, and the Impact of Technology

Chapter 1
Introducing
Today’s
Technologies
Objectives Overview
• Understand technological concepts, systems & operations
– The student will be able to summarize the history of information systems and technology
including: history of computing technology, significant impacts of computing on society,
significant changes in human-computer interaction, and the history of the Internet.
– The student will be able to explain the components of a computer.
– The student will be able to differentiate between similar terms including hardware and
software; input and output; data and information; database and database management
system; and information systems and information technology.
– The student will be able to explain net-centric computing including: the history of networking;
the birth of the Internet; wireless and wired networking; and the purpose of networking
software.
– The student will be able to analyze computer security, information security, and network
security.
– The student will be able to explain why the mastery of technology is important in all fields.
– The student will be able to install software applications.
• Use technology to gather and analyze information
– The student will explain how the growth of the Internet and the demands for information from
users outside the organization (customers and suppliers) impact data handling and processing.
• Understand the social implications of technology
– The student will understand the importance of technology on society.
– The student will analyze ethical issues associated with technology including the digital divide;
issues concerning race and gender; freedom of speech; privacy; and copy and digital content
rights.

Programs and Apps (Install)
• Installing a program is the process
of setting up the program to work
with the computer, mobile
device, printer, and/or other
hardware

• Once installed, you can run a

program so that you can interact
with it

• You interact with a program

Programs and Apps
• A software developer, sometimes called a developer
or programmer, is someone who develops programs
and apps or writes the instructions that direct the
computer or mobile device to process data into
information

Data and Information

What we need from the computer is:

• An input device (Models our vison, speech, pointing, etc…)
• A processor (Models our Brain, thinks and stores)
• An output device (Models our display, speech, touch, etc…)
• Optionally - a storage device (Models our memory- Long term and short term

Computers (Our Main Tool)
• A computer is an electronic device, operating under the
control of instructions stored in its own memory, that
can:
– Accept data as input
– Process data according to specific rules Accepts
data Processing
Produces
information
(input) (output)
– Produce information
– And possible store data and information
