• Born 1940 and raised in Laurinburg
• Graduated from Queen’s College in Charlotte
with a Bachelor’s in Mathematics
• Taught Math at a Jr. high school for two years
before getting pregnant with her first child and
becoming a homemaker

Background • Met her husband after her sophomore year of


college
• Active and involved at Presbyterian church in
youth and administrative positions throughout
life
Problem

• Resident experienced decrease in physical functioning following fractures in


arm and leg.
• Fractures were sustained while evacuating from a coastal home prior to the
strike of hurricane Florence.

Strengths and Limitations
• Strengths; prior independence and education
• Limitations; resident is the primary caregiver for her spouse

• Biases; positive connection with resident upon admittance and partiality to


her independence
• Little difference among resident and interviewer values
• More difficult to recognize when more assistance may be needed
Goals and Interventions

• Goals; return to prior level of physical functioning which was adequate for
previous living arrangement
• Independence in ADL and ability to provide oversight for spousal care

• Interventions; medical care, physical and occupational therapies, location of


local support for continuing care
• Timeframe; 8 weeks
Recommendations
• Additional structure to therapy appointments may
make time management less difficult for active and
social residents
• Reported to Social Worker (SW)

• Research also supported at-home exercises designed


by physical therapists for strengthening muscles
(Fahlström, Kamwendo, Forsberg, & Bodin, 2018)
