OBJECTIVES
• To define force
• Characteristics of force
• Types of force with examples
FORCE
Force can be defined as a push or a pull that changes or tends to
change the state of rest or uniform motion of an object or changes the
direction or shape of an object. It causes objects to accelerate or add to
their overall pressure. It is the basic cause of motion from rest.
It is measured in ‘Newton’ (N). The basic formula for it is, F = m.a,
where, ‘m’ stands for the mass in kilograms and ‘a’ stands for
acceleration in m/sec2.
To define the force acting upon an object completely it not only requires
the magnitude but also information regarding the direction of the force. A
force is a vector that has a direction so to represent a force in a diagram
it is common to use an arrow. Such diagrams are called vector diagrams
and are used throughout the study of physics.
Characteristics of force
• It can change the state of motion of an object
• It can change the shape of an object
• It is a vector quantity
• If two forces acting on an object are equal in magnitude but opposite in
direction then the net force acting on the body is zero.
Types of forces
There are different types of forces in the Universe. Based on the nature
of the interaction between two bodies, they can be classified into two
main categories viz.
• Contact Forces: These take place when objects touch each other. For
e.g. when you kick a ball or pull a chair, spring force.
• Non-Contact Forces: Forces that act between bodies separated by a
distance without any actual contact. Some examples of Non-Contact
Forces are Gravitational Forces, Electrical Forces, Magnetic Forces
