Calvary Hills

Calvary Hills takes pride in its 11 hectares of

rolling terrain upon which lies the life-size
images of six-meter high statues depicting the
14 Station of the Cross. This site was created
in 1982 and conceived by parish priest
Rogelio Cortez.
Constructed from brick and stone, the Church
of San Antonio de Galicia is one of the few
remaining Catholic churches in the country
that feature a buttress. It is believed to have
been built in 1765-1787 under the parish
priest Pedro de San Pedro. The church was
renovated in the 1980s under Parish Priest
Camilo Castillejos.
There is a brick stairway behind the church
providing a nice view of Cagayan River. The
river was used by Spanish officials traveling
from town to town by river, and by merchants
who needed to transport goods to and from
galleons.
Saint James Parish Church

The Iguig Church was constructed from

1765 to 1787. It is unique in that it is
the only centuries-old church in the
country that features flying buttresses
behind it. But more than that, it is also
believed that the church houses the
Jubilee Cross containing relic of the
True Cross of the Lord Jesus.
Also in the church vicinity is a three
centuries old well, a Dominican
convent ruin and the 11 hectare rolling
hills are the larger-than-life size
concrete 14 stations of the

largest churches in the Cagayan Valley. A
historical marker bearing a brief history of the
church was installed in 1982 by the National
Historical Institute, precursor of the National
Historical Commission of the Philippines.
Father Tomas Villa was assigned as its first
vicar. Father Villa erected a temporary
parochial structure made of light materials
with Saint Peter and Saint Paul as patron
saints. The current church is attributed to
Father Antonio Lobato, OP who initiated the
construction in 1761 and was completed in

Isabela Province

Isabela is the second largest province of

the Philippines, and the largest on the island
of Luzon in land area. Its capital is the city
of Ilagan. Situated within the Cagayan
Valley region, it is bordered by the provinces
of Cagayan to the north, Kalinga to the
northwest, Mountain Province to the central-
west, Ifugao and Nueva Vizcaya to the
southwest, Quirino and Aurora to the south,
and the Philippine Sea to the east.
The province got its name from Isabella II
of Spain, who was the wife of a Spanish
monarch during the Spanish colonial era in
the Philippines. There have been proposals to
change the name of the province into
something that will better suit the indigenous
roots of the country.
The Ruins at San Pablo Church

San Pablo Church was built in 1624. It

is said to be the oldest in our province.
It has elegant walls surrounding its
atrium. The atrium is uniquely
adorned with gorgeous clay insets of
rosettes and sun emblems.
The San Pablo bell tower has six layers
(including the circular apex) and is
made of adobe, the tallest in the
Cagayan Valley. The church is said to
be the only church in Cagayan
Valley built with soft stones, hence its
“fast” deterioration.
San Matias Parish Church

The first church made of nipa and

other light materials was built by
the Dominican priest Francisco Nuñez
in 1707, and dedicated to Saint
Matthias. Tumauini became an
independent parish from Cabagan in
1751.]The current church was built
under the auspices of another
Dominican, Domingo Forto, in 1783
and later continued by the priest
Antonio Herrera in 1788. In
constructing the church, Forto hired
artisans from as far south
as Pampanga. It was completed in
1805.
The church was damaged during
the Second World War; a faithful
reconstruction programme followed,
with undamaged parts of the church
building retained.
Japanese Tunnel

They call it the Ilagan Japanese Tunnel

which apparently has been used by the
Japanese soldiers as base/prison during
the World War II.
People have confused it for a cave
although it’s actually a man-made
tunnel crafted in distress with the sweat
and blood of the detained Ilagueños. It
served a lot of purposes such as a jail
to the Filipino guerrillas during the war
and a storehouse of guns, treasures,
and hidden wealth.
Feel like you are traveling back in time
through the Ilagan Japanese Tunnel as
the government has set-up a sound
system to create sound effects feels in
the area. There also were replicas of
Japanese soldiers and Filipino
prisoners (imagine that with sound
effects).
Museum and Library

Preserves Isabela's rich historical and

cultural heritage. On display are the
museum’s collections of antiques
including artifacts, fossils,
ethnographic items, heirloom pieces,

sculpture, and graphic arts), historical
and cultural dioramas, and miniature
models of provincial landmarks,
among others. Since its inauguration
on 11 May 1999, the museum has
been located in Ilagan's old capitol
building.
Queen Isabela Park

The Park was built in honor of Queen Isabella

II of Spain after whom
the province of Isabela was named
through a royal decree issued by the
King of Spain on May 1, 1856. It’s
a magnificent megastructure which include
s a colossal amphitheatre
designed to serve as venue for the
leisure, cultural and tourism activities of
the province. It features eco-friendly and self-
sustaining green design, while the rear
portion has a landscaped lagoon with natural
spring water.

Hacienda De San Luis

The hacienda is founded in 1880's, named

after the patron Saint of Spain, St. Louis.
Known during Spanish colonial rule as
"Bodega de Tabacco" or hacienda purchasing
tobaccos driven away as a part of the galleon
trade of Manila-Acapulco in spanish period.
The hacienda marks the touch of the history
of Katipunan forces, the Japanese occupation,
World War II, and other events of the
Philippine history.
Situated along the hacienda is the most
beautiful part of the journey which is the
museum, where you can see how tobaccos are
being made, sculptures like of St. Luis, and
different masterpieces. You can also try the
250m long and 30ft high zip line, where you
can see from above the majestic Cagayan
River and forest trees view.
If you are too adventurous, you can also try to
experience the repelling or rock climbing and
wall climbing. The hacienda is also a perfect
place for friends and family for a camping
where you can stay there for a night or a day
to complete the adventures.
Our Lady of the Pillar Church
It was September 8, 1739 when a group of
Dominican missionaries landed in Turayong,
a barangay of this town which was later
named Cauayan. From the very start of their
mission work, the missionaries managed to
convert to the Christian Faith some 140
Gaddangs, the pioneer inhabitants of this city.

It was in the year 1741 when the Dominican

authorities, meeting in a general chapter in
Manila, declared this mission of Cauayan a
full-fledged parish. It was dedicated to Our
Lady of the Pillar commonly known as the
NUESTRA SEÑORA DEL PILLAR in the
old days. The first vicar of this parish was
Fray Antonio Del Ocampo who was at the
