Renewable Energy

Can renewable energies

make a major contribution to
the global energy budget?
Renewable Energy
Renewable energy is derived from natural processes
that are replenished constantly.
Types of renewable energy sources include;
1) Solar energy
2) Hydropower
3) Solar energy
4) Geothermal energy
5) Bioenergy
6) Ocean energy
Renewable Energy

 Renewable energy often displaces conventional

fuels in four areas:
1) Electricity generation.
2) Hot water/space heating.
3) Transportation.
4) Rural (off grid) energy sources.
Renewable Energy

 Ban Ki-moon: Renewable energy has the ability to lift the

poorest nations to new levels of prosperity.
Significant energy security and economic benefits comes from;
1) Rapid deployment of renewable energy.
2) Energy efficiency.
3) technological diversification of energy sources.

Renewable Energy
Renewable energy;

Reduce environmental pollution e.g. air pollution

caused by burning of fossil fuels.
Improve public health.
Reduce premature mortalities due to pollution.
Save associated health costs .
Growth of Renewable energy
Renewable Energy

In 2015 global investment in

renewables rose 5% to $285.9 billion,
breaking the previous record of $278.5
billion in 2011.
Contribution of renewables to
energy security

Energy security-the degree of probability of disruption to

energy supply occurring.
Some of the energy security risks include;
Incapacity of electricity infrastructure systems to meet
growing load demand.
The threat of an attack on centralized power production
structures.
Volatility in oil and gas markets.
Contribution of renewables to
energy security

The advantages of renewables is that they address

environmental and energy security objectives.
An increase of renewables in the energy mix reduces;
 The impact of supply variations and
 Disruptions creating synergies in terms of the energy
security.
Current energy use by market
segment
Conclusion
Renewable energy can make a major contribution to the global
energy budget;
A result of its growth over the recent years
Expected to increase even higher in the future.
Renewable energy has a positive impact on the energy security
issues facing both developing and developed countries.
Technological development and cost in relation to competing
conventional energy technologies will play a key role in
achieving this objective.
