Integrated Coastal Resources Management Project (ICRMP) Mati City, Davao Oriental PRESENTATION OUTLINE I. Overview II. Challenges in the Community III. Responses to Challenges IV. Lessons Learned V. Good Practices VI. Success Stories VII. Partnering I. OVERVIEW The Philippines is part of the Coral Triangle, also known as the “Amazon of the Seas” for having the most number of water resources.
Seventy percent (70%) of citizens live in
coastal areas where fishing is the only known livelihood. II. CHALLENGES
Major Challenges:
Address the critical issues of
sustainable management and coastal resources to help mitigate poverty II. CHALLENGES To preserve mangrove areas which serve as natural protection for the continuous livelihood of mangrove- dependent communities against threats of storm surge and coastal erosion.
To provide alternative sources of income to the
community through strengthened partnering and networking of various agencies (e.g. Environment and Natural Resources Offices, Local Government Units (LGUs), and People’s Organizations (POs), and the community). III. RESPONSES Implementation of the Integrated Coastal Resources Management Project (ICRMP) which promoted the “ridge-to-reef” approach in managing sustained coastal resources.
ICRMP is a six-year project (June 2007 – June
2013) aimed to sustain management of coastal resources and to increase income for coastal communities. IV. LESSONS LEARNED Community Acceptance
Communication with the community should
be consistent to correct any wrong impression that beneficiaries may have about the project
Community Participation
Sustainable livelihood and environmental
protection should be given equal importance IV. LESSONS LEARNED Local Governance
Change in leadership may cause delays or
discontinuity of project activities and initiatives (e.g. implementation of environmental codes and management plans)
Policy should be made mandating LGUs to ensure
the adoption of ICM plans
Community involvement should be encouraged for
proper and successful project implementation IV. LESSONS LEARNED Convergence
Upland and coastal management should be
done altogether
The LGU’s political will and power to enforce
environmental legislation and ordinances is important to the mobilization the project objectives V. GOOD PRACTICES Ecotourism Strategy
Introduce environment-friendly alternative sources of
income to the community.
Establish and assist People's Organizations to
manage the Marine Protected Area (MPA) at the community level through Memorandum of Agreement (MOA)
Practice comparing the damaged with the healthy
part of the MPA to encourage coastal and marine resource protection DAGHANG SALAMAT!
