How God Gave the

Scripture
REVELATION
GOD REVEALING HIS MIND AND TRUTH

Revelation means – “To unveil, to make

known a truth”

Biblical or Special Revelation is that act of

God by which He directly communicates truth
which was previously unknown, and
undiscoverable in any other way by the mind
of man (1Corinthians 2:9-10a, 11b, 14a).

Inspiration means, “God breathed, a

conscious forcible breathing” (2Timothy
3:16).

It is the supernatural control of God over the

production of the Old and New Testament, so
that all that was written is true and accurate.

Plenary Inspiration means, “full, complete,

extending to every part.” “All Scripture is
given by inspiration” (2Timothy 3:16).

Verbal Inspiration means, “pertaining to

words, every word”. Every word of Scripture
is inspired (1Corinthians 2:13; 2Peter 3:2).

“Holy men of God spake as they were moved

by the Holy Spirit (2Peter 1:20-21).
The Scripture does not originate with the
writer (private interpretation). No, the
Scripture did not come by the will of men.
Rather, holy men spake as they were moved
(carried along by) the Holy Spirit (Ephesians
3:4-5; Hebrews 11:1).

 Christ’s Testimony Concerning “The Scriptures”.

Twelve times Jesus recognized

these divisions under various names:
Scripture, The Law, The Law and The Prophets,
and the Psalms, and Moses and The Prophets
(Luke 24:25-27, 44-45).

 The Testimony of New Testament Writers

The New Testament writers quote

the Old Testament approximately 240 times.

2Timothy 3:16 and 2Peter 1:20-21 claim that

ALL Scripture or Prophecy (the same OT that
we have in our Bibles) is inspired by God.

 The Testimony of Prophecy

Bible Prophecy means, “the predicting

of future events under the influence
of Divine guidance”.

There are 33 fulfilled prophecies concerning

Christ’s life. These point to the inspiration
of the Scriptures.

ILLUMINATION
GOD’S ACTION IN THE MIND OF MAN.

Illumination refers to the process of

understanding truth already revealed.

This occurs when the indwelling Holy Spirit

acts on the minds of believers giving them
insight and understanding of the already
revealed Word of God (Matthew 16:17; Luke 24:45;
1Corithians 2:12-14; Psalms 119:18).
Unseen things of God are undiscoverable by
the natural man (2:9). This shows the need of
a supernatural revelation from God.

These undiscoverable things God has revealed

to chosen men (2:10-12).
This is revelation.
The things revealed are communicated in Holy
Spirit taught words (2:13).
This is inspiration.

These Holy Spirit-taught-words of the Bible

are spiritually discerned only by those having
the Holy Spirit dwelling in them (2:14-16).
This is illumination.
