INTRODUCTION
• Due to Non-corrosive nature, High specific strength and Lower specific weight, Fibre
Rebar Reinforcement are used as a replacement for steel reinforcement.

• In general glass fibres are used, but due to increased elastic modulus and stiffness
carbon fibres are used.

• Carbon fibres have been replaced by basalt fibres due to its Low cost, High Ecological
compatibility and Functional property.

• Basic mechanical and environmental performance of Basalt Fibre Reinforced Polymer

Rebar against conventional steel rebar in RC Beams have been done.
LITERATURE REVIEW
Marianne Inman et al “A Mechanical And Environmental Assessment And
Comparison Of Basalt Fibre Reinforced Polymer (Bfrp) Rebar And Steel
Rebar In Concrete Beams”, International Conference On Sustainability In
Energy And Buildings, September 2016.

This paper compares holistically the mechanical and environmental performance

of basalt fibre reinforced polymer (BFRP) rebar against conventional steel rebar in
concrete beams. This assessment involves material testing and life cycle assessment
(LCA). The results show that BFRP tendons in reinforced concrete beams are stronger
and lighter than steel with a better environmental profile and fewer embodied emissions,
as fewer material and energy resources are required during production. The future
market is expected to be within the precast industry, rather than in on-site construction,
as precast BFRP concrete beams have approximately half the emissions of steel
reinforced concrete beams.
Properties Of Basalt Rebar Reinforcement

• Basalt rock is principally composed of silica, alumina, with lime,

magnesium oxide and ferric oxide found in lesser percentages.
• Basalt is extruded into continuous filaments with a diameter of 12-18μm.
• In order to convert the fibres into BFRP tendons, the basalt fibre strands
are glued together with resins.
MECHANICAL TEST
• TEST SPECIMEN

Reinforcement Details

• BFRP reinforced, pre-stressed specimen

• 2 no’s of 10mm dia BFRP tendon @ 150mm eccentricity.
• Prestressed anchoraged using 24mm dia bolts.
• Pre stressed force = 50% increased ultimate strength of steel
reinforcement.
• Steel reinforced specimen
• Fe 500 grade steel
• 2 no’s of 12mm dia bar @ tension zone
• 40mm cover
Test results

• The failure mode of the beams pre-stressed by BFRP tendons was due to
bending-shear failure.
• The failure moment was nearly constant for all beams (from 23.1 to 30.6 KNm).
• The maximum shear force at failure varied depending on a/d ratio.
• This indicates that the a/d ratio has a significant effect on shear capacity.
ADVANTAGES OF BASALT FIBER REINFORCED
CONCRETE
• The impact strength of basalt fiber reinforced concrete increases in about 20 times.
• Basalt fiber is not liable to galvanic corrosion, comparing to usual rebar that is an electrical
conductor and can have the cathode effect.
• Construction time reduces due to the needless to install wire mesh.
• The thickness of the concrete layer can be reduced to half.
• The fiber can be easily mixed.
• The fatigue strength of basalt fiber reinforced concrete increases.
• The total cost of the construction work reduces.
• Reduces the width of cracks.
CONCLUSION

• The basalt fiber is now being a popular choice for the material scientist for
the replacement of steel and carbon fiber due to its high rigidity and low
elongation or extension at break.
• Its supreme tenacity value makes it as a useful reinforcement material in
the present and also for the future era to come.
