Conclusion Priyanka
Work Study?
• Is systematic examination of
methods of carrying on
activities so as to improve the
effective use of resources and
set up standards of performance
for the activities being carried
out.
• Work Study has two major branches:
1.Method study
2.Work Measurement
What is method
study?
• Method study is the
process of
subjecting work to
systematic,
critical scrutiny
to make it more
effective and
efficient.
• Originally designed
for the analysis
Objective of Method Study…
• Improvement in all use of
inputs-4M’s and also time
and information
• Economy in human effort
and reduce unnecessary
fatigue
• Improvement in design of
plant and equipment
• Improvement in safety
standards and procedures
Advantages of Method Study
1. Work simplification
2. Improved working method (cheaper method)
3. Better product quality

4. Improved workplace layout
5. Improved equipment design
6. Better working conditions/environment
7. Better materials handling and lesser
materials handling cost
Factors considered in
method study
1 . Economic Considerations
• Cost of the study
• Time loss due to investigation
• Costs associated with the implementation of changes in
the present methods
2 . Technical Considerations
• If the management of the organization wants a
technological advancement i.e. equipment or processes
• The machine tool is not cutting at the optimal speed.
3 . Human Reactions
• Consultation, meeting with workers and union
• Defining objectives, scope and needs
• Proper written and oral communication with workers
• Dispelling fears related to cut in wages, firing of
workers, more efforts in work, higher target, etc

Steps of method
study…
• Select (the work to be studied);
• Record (all relevant information
about that work);
• Examine (the recorded
information);
• Develop (an improved way of
doing things);
• Define(approach to the new way
of doing things

 (3) The pattern of material
movement, as indicated by the strings,
is helpful in the modification in
plant and machinery.

3:Examine
Examine of questions is done in 2 parts:
1. Primary Questions
2. Secondary Questions
3.
Primary Questions Secondary Questions

1.Purpose:for which 1.Purpose:what is done? Why

2.Place:at which is it done?
2.Place :where is done? Where

4:Develop
After critical examination of records
is complete, it is necessary to transform
the learning’s into the development of new
methods. Some approaches are:
 (a) Eliminate unnecessary activities.
 (b) Combine two or more activities.
For example, if one uses a combination tool
for two operations, say, cutting and
drilling, the total set-up time will reduce.
 (c) Resequence activities so as to
reduce time and effort.
 (d) Simplify process to reduce number
of operations or reduce effort or reduce
throughput, etc.

Conclusion
 The aim of method study is to
analyse a situation, examine the
objectives of the situation and then
to synthesize an improved, more
efficient and effective method or
system. The method study procedure
is thus a convenient representation
of what may be a complex process.
