The Procedure of Capacity Dimensioning
for Single Site
 Capacity dimensioning for single site is performed by
simulation tool. The following is the basic procedure of
simulation: Cell radius can be
Cell radius obtained from link budget.

SINR SINR distribution in the cell is

distribution a result of simulation.

Cell average Cell average throughput can

throughput be calculate based on SINR
distribution.

Calculation of Cell Average Throughput
Based on SINR Distribution
 The basic procedure of calculate cell average throughput based
on SINR distribution is:
 SINR distribution  MCS distribution Throughput distribution

b1~b2 b% MCSb Throughputb
c1~c2 c% MCSc Throughputc

Calculation of Single User Throughput(IP
Layer)
It is the sum of throughput
of different service types.
 Single User Throughput (Kbps) = (  k
(Data Volume per Sessionk *
BHSAk * Penetration Ratiok)) * (1+ Peak to Average Ratio) / 3600

Considering the burst traffic of PS service,

Peak to Average Ratio is used.

Transfer IP layer Throughput to MAC
Layer Throughput
 The result of single site capacity dimensioning is MAC layer
throughput. So the result of network throughput in IP layer
should be transfer to the throughput in MAC layer.
Average Packet Size Relative Efficiency
Protocol Layer
(Byte) (IP->MAC)
IP 300 -

RLC 304 302/304×100%=99.34%
MAC 306 304/306×100%=99.35%

The relative efficiency from IP layer to MAC layer is:

• 99.34%*99.34%*99.35% = 98.04%

Balance Dimensioning between Coverage
and Capacity
 Maybe the results of coverage dimensioning and the result of
capacity dimensioning are different. Then the number of eNodeB
needs to be balanced between coverage and capacity. The final
number of eNodeB as the result of dimensioning is:
