THEODOLITE TRAVERSE

Definition
A traverse consists of a connected series of lines
on earths’ surface, the length and bearings of
which have been determined. Following
measurements are made:-
a. Horizontal Angles
b. Vertical Angles
c. Distances
d. Bearings
TYPES OF TRAVERSE
Open Traverse
An open traverse is used to provide control for the
survey of a narrow strip of area. It is used when:-
 Control points are available on the other extent of
the area to check errors.
 Survey of a narrow strip of land.
 Survey of linear features.
Close Traverse
 A close traverse is used to provide control for the
survey of a compact area such that the traverse
finishes at the same line from which the opening
bearing was taken. Close Traverse is used when:-
 Control points are not available on the other extent of
area to close the traverse for checking errors.
 Survey of a small and compact area.
 Fixing boundaries of forests, lakes etc
FIELD MEASUREMENTS

 Distances- EDM, Total Stations,Chains.

 Angles-Theodelite, Total Station.
 Bearings-Compass ,Astronomical Observations
