Tonal Notes
■ A note that is in the harmony (triad) that is being played at the same time.
■ These notes are generally in the key that the music is being played in as well.
– Consider what happens when the music modulates – would the tonal notes
change?
Non Tonal Notes
■ A note that IS NOT in the harmony (triad) that is being played at the same time.
Passing Notes – using music notation
■ Definition: A note that is NON-TONAL and exists to ensure for a smooth transition
between two TONAL notes.
■ Firstly, identify the tonal and non-tonal notes (Consider where the chords lie in the bar).
■ Where are the step wise passages?
Auxiliary Notes – using music notation
■ Definition: An Auxiliary note is a NON-TONAL note that follows a principle note and
returns to the principle note.
