Factors affecting Grinding wheel selection

There are five factors which affects the choice

of Grinding wheel specification

• Material to be ground and its Hardness

• Amount of Stock removal & finish
required
• Whether the grinding is done wet or dry
• Wheel speed
• Area of grinding contact
Grinding wheel selection
Material to be ground and its Hardness

Aluminium oxide suitable for steels and ferrous metals

Abrasive
Silicon carbide for cast iron and non ferrous metals
Fine grit size for Hard and brittle material
Grit size
Coarser grit for soft and ductile materials
Harder grade will be suitable for soft materials
Grade Softer grade releases the dulled grains more readily,
and suitable for Hard materials
Grinding wheel selection
Amount of Stock removal & finish required

Coarse grit is selected for fast-cutting action

Grit size
Fine grit is selcted where high sfinish is required
Vitrified bonded wheels are generally used for fast-
cutting action
Bond
Resinoid, rubber and shellac bonded wheels produce
the highest finish.
Grinding wheel selection
Whether the grinding is done wet or dry

For precision grinding, coolant is necessary.

However, in some cases ( e.g. Tool regrinding) the

process may be dry, in which a softer grade wheel
may be necessary.

For wet grinding, a one grade harder wheel can be

used as the coolant reduces the heat generated in
grinding.
Grinding wheel selection
Wheel speed

Vitrified bonded wheels should not be used at

pheripheral speeds over 33 meters per second except
for specially designed wheels
Bond Resinoid, rubber and shellac bonded wheels are used
in most applications over 35 meters upto 45 meters
per secons and specially designed wheels for speed
upto 80 meters per second.
Grinding wheel selection
Area of grinding contact

A coarser grit is required when the area is relatively

large, as in surface grinding
Grit size As the area of contact becomes smaller, the unit
pressure increases, tending to break down the wheel
face therefore fine grit size will be suitable
On large area of contact, a soft grade wheel provides
normal breakdown of grit
Grade On the other hand, with smaller area of contact, a
Harder grade is needed to withstand the increasingly
higher unit pressure

General terminology used

Truing
Truing means the removal of abrasive material from the
cutting face of of the wheel and the sides of the wheel, so
that the wheel runs true with respect to the axis of
rotation.
Dressing
It means dressing of the wheel surface. After grinding
many pcs the wheel surface gets blunt and its re-
sharpening is called the dressing of the wheel.
General terminology used

Dress Lead
Distance in a screw pitch is the dress lead for the
wheel surface.
Dress interval
It is the time or the no. of pcs between 2 successive
dressings and it is also known as skip.Skip means
next dressing is done after how many pcs
Compensation
Dress compensation means wheel head or diamond
should be brought closer by the amount of dressing
required .
