Prisoner’s Dilemma Theory
What is Prisoner’s Dilemma?
● Developed by scientist Merril Flood and Melvin Drasher of
RAND Coorporation in 1950
● Formalized by Princeton mathematician Albert W Tucker.
● Refers to a situation, where an individual has to choose
between self-interest and mutual interest.
● The prisoner’s dilemma elegantly shows when each individual
pursues his/her own self-interest, the outcome is worse than if
they had both cooperated.
● In other words, prisoner’s dilemma provides a framework
for understanding how to strike a balance between
cooperation and competition.
What is Nash Equilibrium?
● A concept of game theory where the optimal
outcome of a game is one where no player
has an incentive to deviate from his
chosen strategy after considering an
opponent’s choice.
● Every person in a group makes the best
decision for herself based on what he/she
thinks the others will do. Every member of
the group is doing as well as they possibly
Nash
can.
Equilibrium
Case Study: The Hunger Games
In The Hunger Games...
● 24 people must fight to death to be the
sole survivor
● Key: staying alive long enough →
kill everyone
● Rational strategy
○ Eliminate the strongest → Katniss
Everdeen
○ Form alliances
The dilemma:

To kill everyone or
to stay in an alliance?
Explanation/Condition

● Since It’s the Hunger Games, killing others is the best and being killed by others is the
worst.

● Everyone has to choose between sleep or not sleep.

● the main goal is to kill each other in order to stay alive, so the best option is to stay awake
for both side because it has more chance to kill rather than sleep.
NORMAL CONDITION, IF YOU WERE PUT IN THE

KILL TIRED

Before kill each other, their goal is to kill the strongest (Katniss) so they all chose to sleep because they knew that they will
not kill each other at that time and they can take a rest.
Summary
● As what nash equilibrium explain, the optimal outcome can be achieved
when no player has an incentive to deviate from his chosen strategy and
complete their goal. Both sides can choose rather to compete or cooperate
each other
● For a simple games, nash equilibrium can be achieved. However, for
complicated games, people don’t normally choose nash equilibrium. They
choose what they think is the best for them. ( e.g. Hunger games)
