Operation - Backup

• Create a snapshot of all disks associated with the VM instance

• Only crash consistent backups are supported
• Create disks from those snapshots,
• Attach the snapshot disks to the VSA proxy
• Generate a configuration file from the VM instance metadata
• Read the attached disks and backup the data
• Delete the snapshots and the disks created from the snapshots

Operation - Restore

• Create empty disks based on the size of the disks that existed on the VM Instance.
• Attach the disks to the VSA proxy
• Write the data to the disks
• Detach the disks from the proxy
• Create a new virtual machine based on the configuration file metadata.
• Attach the disks to the new virtual machine.

VMware Cloud on AWS
Overview
• Support for VMware cloud on AWS (VMC)
• A vCenter server and high performance hosts running in Amazon’s
datacenter
• Customer pays for the infrastructure instead of the VMs that they run.
• Utilizes vSAN as a shared datastore.
• No access to the hosts themselves
• Installed and Configured just like a on-premise VMware installation.
• Standard VSA HotAdd backup
• Must use VDDK 6.5.2 (handled automatically)
• Recommended to write to an S3 library.

Limitations

• These limitations are all because we are not able to access the
hosts
• No live recovery (vMotion restore)
• No live mount/boot
• No agentless file level recovery
*All other VMware features will work.
