Runoff Analysis

 Convenient method for estimating peak discharge in catchment areas up to 100 km2.

 The principle is that a rainfall intensity (I) begins and continues indefinitely and then the rate of runoff increases until it

reaches the time of concentration (tc), where all of the watersheds are contributing to the flow at the outlet point or point

under consideration
Catchment Area

2. Delineation of Catchment Area

 Google Earth Pro / AutoCAD / Arc GIS

Catchment Area

2. Delineation of Catchment Area

 Catchment areas are derived by delineating the basin boundary in polygons in a topographic map (1:50,000

NAMRIA map)
Surveys and Investigation

3. Topographical and Cross Sectional Surveys

 Cross Section survey interval of 20m-200m

 Survey to be extended20m beyond both banks.

Design Discharge

4. Determination of Design Discharge Q

 Uniform Flow Calculation

Discharge Measurement
Discharge Measurement
Design Discharge

Discharge to be used as Design Parameter (Dike)

Freeboard is the margin from design flood level up to the elevation of the dike crest. It is the margin of the height which does

not allow overflow.

Design Velocity

Velocity for Design of Revetment

Design velocity shall be used to select the appropriate slope covering.

Classification of Flood Control & River Structures
1) Waterways / Esteros

- Waterways / esteros are any natural or artificial channels or depression that conveys water and

sediments.
Classification of Flood Control & River Structures
2) Dike (Levee)

- Embankment constructed along the bank of a stream, river, or lake for the purpose of

protecting the landside from the overflow of floodwater.

Classification of Flood Control & River Structures
3) Spur Dike

- Structure to reduce the flow velocity near the bank

- To direct the flow away from the bank in order to protect it from collapse.

/ Boulders Flow direction

Spur Dike
Classification of Flood Control & River Structures
4) Revetment

- Structure used for the protection of the riverbank from collapse brought by erosion, scouring and

riverbed degradation.
Classification of Flood Control & River Structures
6) Groundsill (Mini Dam)

- Structure to fix the riverbed and prevent further degradation

Anilao River Groundsill Malbasag River Groundsill

6) Groundsill (Mini Dam)
Classification of Flood Control & River Structures
7) Flood Gate / Sluice Gate

- Constructed on tributary / drainage channel to discharge

flood water to main river. During high tide the gate is

closed to prevent adverse or intrusion of saline water.
