Newton’s Second Law of Motion

Sir Isaac Newton also proposed Newton’s Second Law of
Motion or the Law of Acceleration. This law states that: The
acceleration is produced when a net force acts on a mass and that
acceleration I proportional to both the force acting on the object and
the object’s mass.
This law is used using the equation F= ma, where F is
force, m is mass and a is acceleration. Remember that the SI unit
for force is newton (N), the SI unit for mass is Kilogram (kg) and the
unit for acceleration is meter per second squared (m/s2).
But if the required is acceleration, the formula is a = F/m.
On the other hand if the required data is mass, then the formula is
m = F/a.

Guide Card
Chris wanted to move a 5 kg box across the hall.
To do this, he applied 50 N of force. What is the
acceleration of the box?

Given: Force (F)= 50 N, mass (m)= 5 kg

Required: acceleration (a)
Solution: I hope that this material
F= ma will help you find the
answer to such
50 = (5 ) (a) questions as how force
50 / 5 = 5a/5 and acceleration is
related.
10 m/s2 = a

Activity 3- Ball - ing!
1. Mark picks up a medicine ball that has a mas of 12
kg. He then applies 15 N of force to lift the medicine
ball. What is the acceleration of the medicine ball in
m/s2 ?

2. Jay has a football with an undetermined mass. He Take note

throws the ball with a force of 50 N. He is standing on on unknown
a football field so he is able to figure out the quantities.

Enrichment Card!
There are three boxes on the top of a
ramp. Box A has a mass of 3 kg, Box B
has a mass of 2 kg and Box C has a mass
of 5 kg. When pushed, all three boxes
moved with the same acceleration.
Arrange the boxes in order of decreasing
net force.
