PC HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS

 TEMS Investigation 16.1 is designed to run on a standard PC and


interfaces with the connected devices mainly through USB or serial ports.

 Minimum configuration requirement: Pentium T7200 or AMD TL-58 class


CPU, preferably with dedicated graphics card from ATI or nVidia; 1 GB
RAM.

 LTE data service testing at high throughput rates (above 50 Mbit/s) with a
Qualcomm chipset based device requires a very powerful PC processor,
For ex: a second-generation Intel Core i5 or comparable Intel Core i7.

PC SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS

 The following operating systems are supported:


• Windows 7 with Service Pack 1 (x86, x64)
• Windows Vista with Service Pack 2 (x86)
• TEMS Investigation also runs under Windows 8 Pro.
 All the latest Windows updates should always be installed.

 Other Software requirements


• NET Framework version 4.5
• Microsoft Network Monitor (NetMon) is used by TEMS Investigation as
IP sniffer and must be present.
• Internet Explorer 8 or later required for Report Generator and online
help.
• Internet Explorer 9 required for HTTP download/upload testing with
• Internet Explorer
• Adobe Flash Player and Microsoft DirectX 9.0c

INSTALLING TEMS INVESTIGATION
 Administrator rights are required to install TEMS Investigation.
 User Authentication Control (UAC) must be turned off
 Install from CD/download following the on-screen instructions.
• If installation does not start automatically, run the .exe file
 Default installation folder:
• C:\Program Files\Ascom\TEMS Products\TEMS Investigation <version>.
 Internet access is required to download 3rd party software

UPDATING TEMS INVESTIGATION
 TEMS Investigation updates are available automatically.
 Check at start up

INSTALLING DEVICE DRIVERS

 Drivers for devices supplied by Ascom are delivered on a separate CD /


download
 Unpack ZIP archive
 Installation of drivers must be done as an Administrator
 HASP SRM driver is installed automatically along with TEMS
Investigation.
 All details regarding installation of device drivers can be found in the
TEMS Investigation User’s Manual.

DETECTING DEVICES
 Before connecting the devices the drivers need to be
installed.

 Case 1:
For some devices, the drivers are already installed. So
after connecting device for the first time, point to the
appropriate folder in order for the device to be detected.
For example: Sony Ericsson W995.

 Case 2:
For some devices, the drivers needs to be installed prior
to connecting the device. For such devices, run the .exe
driver files and once installed, connect the devices. The
devices will be detected automatically in TI.

TEMS INVESTIGATION USER MODES

Two modes of operation:

1. Drive testing mode: The information presented on the screen is


obtained from data-collecting devices connected to the PC and
activated in TEMS Investigation.

2. Analysis mode: The presented information is read from a logfile


which has been loaded in order to inspect and analyze it.

ADDING PRESENTATION WINDOWS
 To add a new presentation window,
go to presentation tab and scroll on
the desired technology or service.

 Select the metric for any of the


technology as desired.

 The presentation window will pop up


with few predefined IEs and metrics.
To add or modify IE, right click and
click on properties.

LOADING MAPS
 A GeoSet is a special type of
workspace used for map layers.
 GeoSets are constructed using
the GeoSet Manager.
 Once the GeoSet is created it can
be opened as a map in the Map
Window.

 Creating Geoset file


• Click on Geoset Manager tab in
Map window pane.
• Go to Layer control button ->
Add -> select the TAB file(s) to
be added for the layer control.

• Save the Geoset file (.gst extension)


• Once saved, the geoset file can be
opened as a map in map window.

PINPOINT WINDOW(1/3)
 The Pinpoint Window facilitates pinpointing of
indoor routes by enabling the construction
and use of pre-planned route. Alternatively,
user can also pinpoint manually in this
window.

 Creating Planned routes


• Go to Presentation -> Positioning ->
Pinpoint Window.
• Click on open and select the map set or
the floor plan image.
• After opening, click on Add route button.
• Click on pencil symbol as shown here.

PINPOINT WINDOW(2/3)
• Give the route name and make
sure the Add Waypoints button is
toggled on.
• Now, on the map, click to add
pinpoints on the desired route,
• Click on done after completion
and save it as .ibwc file

• The map file can be open when


required and click on the saved
route to get the pinpoint route.

PINPOINT WINDOW(3/3)
 Pinpoint without a planned route
• Load the map set or floor plan image
you want to use by clicking the Open
button.
• Instead of selecting a route, click the
“No Route” item.
• Click the Start button.
• This indicates start of logfile
recording. The logfile created is in
regular TEMS Investigation logfile
format (*.trp), which also contains the
auxiliary pinpoint data .

CELL FILES
 TEMS Investigation can present
information of individual cells in
cellular networks.

 Types of Cell files


• XML format (.xml)
• Text format (.cel) (for GSM/UMTS
only)

 Load cell files using the General Window.


 After loading, Cell file settings can be
managed through Cell layer theme.

CREATING CELL FILES (1/2)
 Go to TEMS product folder on the
system -> TEMS Investigation 16
-> XML Schema -> Cell file editor.

 Click on OpenXMLCellFile(Make
sure macros are enabled).

 Select the xml file to be created.


For ex: select CellFileLteExample.

 It will open the LTE cell site file in


a new tab.

 Load the cell site parameters.


Few important parameters
(System type, PCI, PCIG, Lat and
Long, azimuth, beamwidth).

 Cell files can be loaded from general


window.

 Click on Add and select the cell file to


be loaded.

 The cell file will be loaded and can be


viewed in the map window.

 To change the theme settings click on


Add/Edit themes.

INFORMATION ELEMENTS AND EVENTS
 Information elements are the building blocks of all
quantitative presentations in TEMS Investigation.
 They contain Air interface measurements (LTE,
WCDMA, GSM, TD-SCDMA, CDMA, WiMAX),
Data service measurements, Network
configuration parameters, Cell data, Positioning
data.

 Events signify interesting occurrences relating to


the operation of the connected equipment.
Events are generated by the TEMS Investigation
software based on data received from these
devices.

 Presentation layers and Themes are


used to present network data on the
map.
 Themes are created and added to the
presentation layers.
 Information Element (IE) themes
 Event themes
 Use Theme Settings dialog to

 A set of presentation layers is already
supplied, you can modify them or
create new ones.

 To present information elements,


create “Information Element
Themes” (IE Themes).
 They govern the appearance of
markers plotted on the map in terms
of color, size and shape (symbol).
 Colors, sizes and symbols used in
the map are the default ones, set on
the Info Element tab of the
Navigator.
 To create a new IE theme, select a
layer and click Add Theme.

INTRODUCTION TO SERVICE CONTROL
 The Service Control tool is used to compose scripts that automate service
testing – PS and CS and scanning.

 The range of application are as follows:


• Circuit-switched voice and video calls are supported
• Data service testing
• Scanning

 Special activities such as:


• for recording data collected while executing the scripts.
• for applying various control functions to devices, such as RAT lock
and band lock
• for AT commands.

SERVICE CONTROL DESIGNER

 The Service Control Designer window is


where you compose the scripts.

 It consists of:
• Activity pane
• Workflow pane
• Properties pane
• Configuration Sets pane

SCRIPT COMPOSING(1/2)

 A very simple script that dials single voice calls.


 Steps are as follows:
1. Add a voice dial activity to the script

2. The dial box and properties pane would be


marked with exclamation marks (indicating
activity is not properly configured yet)

3. Define a configuration set for the Dial


activity through Configuration Sets pane.

4. To give duration to a call, use the Wait


activity.

SETTING UP DATA SERVICE ACTIVITY
FTP download as an example
1. Add a network connect activity. (This activity is
required whenever we need to run any data
services).

2. Then add a Network Disconnect activity at the


bottom of the workflow.

3. The FTP session itself is handled by the FTP


Download activity. Insert an activity of this type
between network connect and disconnect.

4. For the FTP Download activity, you need to create


configuration set representing the FTP server and
how to access it.

 A snippet is a fixed sequence of activities that is defined as a building
block and can be reused as such, saving time and effort when creating
new scripts.

 Predefined snippets for all supported services


are provided in the Activity pane.

WORKFLOW CONTROL STRUCTURES
 The Control Flow node contains a number of
logical constructs and timers for controlling the
script execution flow.

 Sequence- Used to define a group of activities in


a script as a sequence.

 If –else - Used to split the execution flow into


several branches based on the outcome of a
previous activity.

 While loops – They are used to repeat a


sequence of activities a predetermined
number of times.

VALIDATING & RUNNING SCRIPTS

 Before a script is run, it needs to be validated to ensure that it is


syntactically correct and does not assign tasks that your devices do
not support.

 Automatically validated when you start it.

 Explicitly have a script validated in advance:


Enter the Script menu and choose Validate.
The results will be presented.

 A script can be run either from the Service Control Monitor or from
the Service Control Designer.

MANAGING CONFIGURATION SETS

 Manage configuration sets using the


Settings Manager utility.

 To launch the Settings Manager utility,


choose File -> Manage Settings.

 Useful for exporting/importing


configuration sets files from one PC to
another.

CONNECTING EQUIPMENT
 Equipment tab in Navigator window

 External devices that are connected are


automatically detected and listed in Equipment
tab.

 Devices needs to be activated before using for


data collection.

 Activate/ Deactivate device from its context


menu.

 The manual UE Configuration utility helps TI


recognize a device that is not detected
automatically but which has supported chipsets.

RECORDING LOGFILE

 Logfiles can be recorded in the following ways in


TEMS Investigation:
• From the Record toolbar
• From the Logfile menu.
• Using keyboard shortcuts.
• From within scripts.

 All procedures generate an output file with


extension .trp. Default naming format is
MMDDhhmmss.trp

• Select Start Recording from control activity
box.
• Select Stop Recording from control activity
box.
• Drop all other script activities within these
start and stop recording activities.

 Specify which equipment to be

 While recording using scripts is ongoing,


using the Record toolbar can still be used.

REPLAYING LOGFILES
 Logfile replay in TEMS Investigation is
controlled in the following ways:
• From the Replay toolbar
• From the Logfile menu
• Or using keyboard shortcuts.

 To be able to replay a logfile, user must


deactivate the external equipment.

 Only one logfile can be open at a time.

transfer recorded logfiles to a designated
FTP server, over the air or via an Ethernet
connection.

• This tool is used to locate to position
maps geographically.

to the tool and either use the zoom

• The Route Utility tool can be used to
split one or more logfiles into separate
log files.

• By region – region definition file in .gpx


format, one or more regions splits the

 Route Finder
• This is a tool to locate files based on a
number of selections critierias such as:
• Originating TEMS products and
data- collecting devices
• Date
• Location
• Events and messages occurring in
the file
• Information elements having valid
values in the file.

 LogfileExport
• Logfiles can be converted to plain-text
(ASCII) files with tab-separated
columns, conveniently viewed with a
spreadsheet program.

• Logfiles can also be exported in


formats that are compatible with
MapInfo, ArcView, or Planet.

• Go to Logfile -> Export Logfile -> click


on Add order

 Report Generator
• User can generate a report in HTML
format which summarizes the data in
the Logfiles.

• The generated report is opened in


the default Web browser.

• One or more log files can be added


to generate a report.
