The study determined the degree of client perception
relative to their profile with utilization of primary healthcare
services delivered by a nurse practitioner in the selected
wards of EVRMC hospital i.e, medicine, surgery,
orthopedics and maternity units. The researchers focused
on the identified patient profile namely: age, civil status,
employment, highest educational attainment, and monthly
income. The three domains – Technical Professional,
Trusting Relationship, & Educational Relationship
represents the nurses’ caring behaviors.
Based on the result, there is a difference between the patients’ profile and
patient’s perception. Significant difference exists on the Employment in terms
of Educational Relationship – wherein this domain encompasses the attitude
of the nurse towards the patient and the exchange of information from nurse
to patient and vice versa. There is also a difference that exists on the Civil
Status in terms of Trusting Relationship - wherein this domain approaches
interpersonal relationship situations between nurses and patients and verbal
and nonverbal communication that occurs between the nurse and client. The
overall patient perception on nurses’ caring behavior is moderately satisfied.
It is recommended that nursing staff should make
innovations in the techniques utilized to enhance, not
merely the clinical competencies but also trusting
relationship between nurses and patients. There are
objective care conditions that need to be further explored
using multivariate analysis such as over occupancy,
impact of fellow patients, repeated admissions and
consequences of single rooms versus multi bed units.
Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of
health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury,
facilitation of healing, alleviation of suffering through the
diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy
in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and
populations.
Patient’s profile forms the core of the data for any
medical institution. They allow for the identification of a
patient and his categorization into categories for the
purpose of statistical analysis. (Didier Thizy – Macadamian
Blog, 2011) It is identified as age, civil status, employment,
educational level, monthly income and number of stay of
confinement. The variables were related to the three
domains, which influences their perspective on nurse’s
caring behavior.
The first domain is technical-professional which refer to the skills
that are used by nurses to meet patients’ health needs. The second
domain is educational relationship refers to the knowledge that
assists patients to further understand their health conditions which
will impact their lifestyle and alternatives in managing their health.
The third domain is trusting relationship refers to attending the
emotional needs of the clients.
Theories of patient perception are inadequate because much
research is based on an assumption that satisfaction results from
the patient's perception of the care provided, or whether the
service has met his or her expectations. (Mims & Stanford) In the
literature it is emphasized that the basis of perception is widely
dependent on patient's profile. Because discrepancies often exist
between patients’ perceptions of nurse caring behaviors in relation
to expectation and nurse-patient relationship from patient’s profile,
examining further concurrently should identify how one’s profile
can affect their perspective.
Because patient satisfaction with nurse caring
behaviors is a factor in the patient’s hospital
experience, further research is needed to determine to
what extent caring is perceived by patients in different
wards and whether there is a relationship between
patient profile into their perceptions of caring.
This study was conducted to examine the variable related
to patient’s profile that can affect their perspective on nurses’
caring behavior. It explored further research on what aspect can a
patients’ perception be influenced and its relationship to nurses
caring behavior and to determine if there is insufficiency of the
three domains in nursing care. In order to better meet the needs
of patients, it is important that nurses understand and identify
which behaviors patients view as caring behaviors in order to
optimize the nurse-patient experience.
The researchers believe that the findings of the study
will be beneficial to nursing student since study includes
investigations that map out the profile of patients in relation
to their perception on nurses’ caring behaviour.
The study will be significant also to nurse practitioners
and instructors because this research provides a discussion
about profile of patients in relation to their perception on
nurses’ caring behaviour. Recommendation was offered
about how profile of patients affects to their perception on
nurses’ caring behavior.
The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of the
profile of patients and their perception to nurse’s caring behavior.

Specifically, the study sought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of patients in terms of:

• Age
• Civil Status
• Employment
• Highest Educational Attainment
• Monthly Income
2. What is the patient’s perceptions on nurse’s caring behavior in
terms of the following:
• Technical-professional
• Educational Relationship
• Trusting Relationship

3. Is there a relationship between the patients’ profile and patient’s

perception to nurse’s caring behavior?
The researchers advanced and tested the following hypothesis:

1. There is no relationship between patient’s age and the perception

to nurse’s caring behavior.
2. There is no difference between patient’s civil status and the
perception to nurse’s caring behavior.
3. There is no difference between patient’s employment and the
perception to nurse’s caring behavior.
4. There is no relationship between patient’s highest educational
attainment and the perception to nurse’s caring behavior.

5. There is no relationship between patient’s monthly income and

the perception to nurse’s caring behavior.

6. There is no relationship between patient’s number of days in the

hospital and the perception to nurse’s caring behavior.
The focus of this study was to determine the patient’s profile
in relation to patient’s perception to nurses’ caring behavior.
The locales of this study are the patients of the different
wards (OB, Medical, Orthopedic and Surgical) of Eastern Visayas
Regional Medical Center. There are no other hospitals covered in
this research other than the above-mentioned hospital.
The study also delimited its respondents to 30 patients in each

ward, for a total of 120 respondents. The patients must be admitted

to the clinical areas of the said hospital.

The patients came from different race, social norms and must be

from ages 18 to 70 years old. Those who are conscious, coherent

and free from any pain upon interview.

This study complied with the research of RTRMF- College of

Nursing Batch Neptunites Group 2. The said group prepared a

standardized questionnaire for patients to answer personally and

individually. Any member of the group, if there were any further

questions will assist them and opinions will be openly accepted

from any of the individuals taking part of the research.

Research Design:
Correlational
Research Environment:
This was conducted at the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical
Center (EVRMC) – Medical, Surgical, Orthopedics and Maternity
Units.
Research Respondents:
The respondents of this study are male and female patients,
ages 18-70 years old, who are responsive, not in pain and mentally
sane. The total respondent is 120 patients.
Research Instrument:

A modified version of the Risser Patient Satisfaction Scale

(PSS) with waray-waray translation was used to elicit the research
data. The PSS was designed to evaluate patients’ satisfaction on
nursing care, and originally contained three subscales with a total
number of 25 items defined as follows:

1.Technical-Professional (TP) domain contains seven (7) items

concerning technical issues on care and measurement of the nurses’
behaviors
2. Educational Relationship (ER) domain contains seven (7) items
concerning nurses’ attitude with patients, the exchange of
information between the nurse and patient; and
3. Trusting Relationship (TR) domain, approaches eleven (11)
interpersonal relationship situations between nurses and patient’s
verbal and nonverbal communication, which occurs between them.
Sampling Procedure:

The sampling method utilized in the study is Convenience and

Quota Sampling.

Data Gathering Procedure:

A letter of consent signed by the members of the research group

and the Dean of the College of Nursing was presented to the Chief

Nurse and Medical Center Chief of Eastern Visayas Regional Medical

Center for the permission of the conduct of the study.

Standardized questionnaires were then prepared, which aimed

to determine the profile of patients’ in relation to nurses’ caring

behaviors, which the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center

Ethics Committee agreed upon.

Respondents were provided a consent form to acknowledge their

willingness to participate in the study. The researchers provided

one ballpen for each patient and offered assistance for

clarifications on the questions of the questionnaire. After each

accomplishment of the questionnaire, a recheck was done to

ensure no items were unanswered or left blank.

 Out of 120 respondents, their perception to nurses’
caring behavior is moderately satisfied. The domain
Trusting Relationship garnered the highest percentage
of 85.0% followed by the Educational Relationship
Domain which garnered 65.8% and last was the domain
on Technical Professional which is 44.2%.
