AUGMENTED REALITY

STUDENT: VALCELEAN ANA-CRISTINA

FACULTY OF AUTOMATION AND COMPUTER SCIENCE - TUCN
TOPICS DISCUSSED

• Augmented Reality System

• Display techniques
• Devices
• How it works
• AR vs VR
• Applications & Examples
WHAT IS AUGUMENTED REALITY?
• What does the term Augmented Reality mean?
A technology that superimposes a computer-generated image on a user’s view of the real world, thus providing
a composite view
• When was Augmented Reality invented?
Close to the start of 1990 at Boeing
• Who invented Augmented Reality?
Tom Caudell
• Where did Augmented reality came from?
Came from a head mounted display system and got evolved later on
• What is Augmented Reality?
The process of superimposing digitally rendered images into our real world surroundings, giving a sense of an illusion
or virtual reality
AUGMENTED REALITY
• A combination of a real scene viewed by a user and a virtual scene generated by a computer that
augments the scene with additional information
• An AR system adds virtual computer-generated objects, audio and other sense enhancements to a
real-world environment in real time
AUGMENTED REALITY DEVICES

Mobile devices
• Through mobile devices like smartphones
(tablets also), AR acts like a magic window
PC and connected TV players
• Augmented Reality also works through a
webcam and broadcast through the
screen
Head mounted displays, glasses and lenses
• AR becomes a part of your entire field of
view, preparing for more life
AUGMENTED REALITY VS VIRTUAL REALITY
Augmented Reality Virtual Reality
• Enhances real life with artificial images and text • Replace the real world with the artificial
• The user can interact with the real world, and at • The users enters an entirely immersive world
the same time can see, both the real and virtual and cut off from real world
world
• VR uses devices such Head Mounted
• AR uses devices such as a Smartphone or Display(HMD) & input devices
wearable device
APPLICATIONS

• Medical • Manufacturing,
Maintenance and Repair
• Entertainment
• Consumer Design
• Military Training
• Hazard Detection
• Engineering
• Audio
• Design
• Robotics and Telerobotics
THE FUTURE IS AUGMENTED

A future of holographic
advertisements and AR-assisted
healthcare is not as far away as
you may think. In fact, 24 million
digital reality headsets will be
sold in 2018. By 2025, that
number is expected to jump
to 500 million. It’s no surprise
that Facebook engineers are
saying that AR devices will
replace smartphones within five
years.

“AR is going to change everything, and the
people who recognize that today are going to be
the ones building the reality we'll live in
tomorrow.” (Unknown)
