• An airplane is a
powered, fixed-
wing aircraft that is
propelled forward
by thrust from a jet
engine, propeller or
rocket engine.
Airplanes come in a
variety of sizes,
shapes, and wing
configurations.
MAIN USES AND FUNCTIONS

• The main function of an airplane is

traveling from point A to point B on
and easier faster way.
• The main use that people gives to
airplanes is the transportation of
goods and people, the goods can be
for a military issue or a commercial
one.
WHO INVENTED THE AIRPLANE?

• The Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur, were two American aviators,
engineers, inventors, and aviation pioneers who are generally credited of the
invention and successful fly of an airplane. In 1904–05 the brothers
developed their flying machine into the first practical fixed-wing aircraft.
Although not the first to build experimental aircraft, the Wright brothers were
the first to invent aircraft controls that made fixed-wing powered flight
possible.
EVOLUTION

• Clement Ader constructed his first of three

flying machines in 1886, the Éole. The main
characteristics of the airplane were:
• It was capable to develop 20 horsepower.
• His weight was ~300kg.
• It were capable to ¨hop¨ 50cm at a height
of 20cm.
• (The two following flying machines that
Ader built weren’t able to fly).
• The Wright brothers flights in 1903 are
recognized by the Fédération Aéronautique
Internationale (FAI), the standard setting and
record-keeping body for aeronautics, as "the
first sustained and controlled heavier-than-air
powered flight".
• By 1905, the Wright Flyer III was capable of
fully controllable, stable flight for substantial
periods.
• World War I served as a testbed for the use of the airplane as a weapon.
Airplanes demonstrated their potential as mobile observation platforms, then
proved themselves to be machines of war capable of causing casualties to the
enemy. Following WWI, aircraft technology continued to develop.
• Alcock and Brown crossed the Atlantic non-stop for the first time in 1919.
• The first international commercial flights took place between the United States
and Canada in 1919.
AND THEN WE GET TO THE JET AIRCRAFT

• The first practical jet aircraft was tested in 1939.

• In 1943, the Messerschmitt Me 262, the first
operational jet fighter aircraft, went into service in
the German Luftwaffe.
• In October 1947, the Bell X-1 was the first aircraft
to exceed the speed of sound.
• The first jet airliner was introduced in 1952. The
Boeing 707, the first widely successful commercial
jet.
IMPROVEMENTS THAT AIRPLANES HAVE GIVED
US
• The airplane is used in the war as a powerful weapon.
• Some time ago, many islands and countries were isolated from trade with
others ones, being the ship and long travels the only way to connect them,
but the airplane came to make easier the communication, no only carrying
products and packages, also interchanging cultural information. These
days, people can send things or travel to any place.
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
-High Speed: Passengers and goods -High Costs: Air transport is a costly
can be transported easily from one service.
place to the other. -More Risks: Air transport is prone to
-Minimum Cost: There is no need to accidents.

track or road.
-Lost Baggage
-Free from physical barriers: Air
transport is free from physical barriers.
-Useful in natural calamities: During
earth quake, flood and accidents air
transport is used for rescue operations.
CONCLUSION
• We learned that the airplane took a main role on the
WWI which really surprised us, it was a big step for it,
the other things didn’t really surprised us that much.
