Problem Definition

 Facial recognition is a form of computer

vision that uses faces to attempt to
identify a person or verify a person’s
claimed identity.
 Determine the identity of a face in an
image.
 Processing needs to be fast
 Classification problem
General Description of the
System

 Determine the identity of a face in an

image.
 The computer constructs a face image &
compares it with the target face to be
identified.
 When a match is found, the computer
looks in its database for a matching
pattern of a real person.
Problem with the existing
system
 Present System that are available in the
market now, are not secure because they
use user-id and password information
for validation of authenticated user.
These systems are not much secure
because of password cracking and
password hacking.
 A number of tools for cracking and
password hacking Are available that
breaks the security and hacks the
valuable data of company/organization.
FIVE STEP PROCESS
STEP 1
 ACQUIRING THE IMAGE OF AN
INDIVIDUALS FACE 2 WAYS TO AQUIRE
IMAGE

1) Digitally scan an existing photograph

2) Acquire a live picture of a subject

STEP 2
 LOCATE IMAGE OF FACE

Detect the faces in the image that has

been obtained.
STEP 3
 ANALYSIS OF FACIAL IMAGE

1) Measures face according to is peaks

and valleys (nodal points)

2) Focuses on the inner region of the face

3) Nodal points are used to make a face

print
STEP 4

 COMPARISON

The face print created is compared to all

face prints the system has stored in its
database.
STEP 5

 MATCH OR NO MATCH

Decides whether or not any comparisons

are close enough to declare a possible
match
Process
Objective
 Identify face features
 Detection of faces and personal
recognition
 Train the system with a convenient
database
 Near- real time operation
 Automatically learning new faces
 Insensitivity to small changes
 Simplicity
Advantages
 A person face will be the private, secure and convenient
password.
 Security is the major aspects in the face recognition
system.
 Used to Recognize criminals in public spaces (airports,
shopping centers n stores) and Fight terrorism.
 Find fugitive- Verify identity to grant access in
restricted areas:
 Risk: privacy rights
 Improved human-machine interaction
 ATMs, Computers, Cell phones
 Intelligent buildings
 Personal information access
 recognition task is not very expensive
Technology
 Software requirements:
 Operating System: Windows 2000/XP
(Client/Server).
 Front-end: Vb. Net

 Hardware Requirements:
 Pentium IV Processor with 1 GHz Clock
Speed128 MB RAM, 40 GB HDD, 32 Bit
PCI Ethernet Card

Limitations
 Range of aspects: defining new face classes for
each person
 parameter selection must be unambiguous to
match an individual’s face
 Optimizing speed in images analyzing
 Noise cause performance Degradation
 Lighting variation
 Orientation variation (face angle)
 Large database
 Time requirements
Conclusion
 Used for security and human- machine
interface applications.
 Machine learning techniques suitable for
this application domain, good results.
 Nearly real-time operation
 Relatively simple
 Works well in a constrained environment
Future
 No standard way of approaching the
problem
 Advancements in hardware and software
 Slow integration into society in limited
environments
 Very large potential market
