Meaning of lines (Verse 1 - lines1-8)
The first verse describes the six hundred soldiers of the light bridgade responding to
the command to charge forward.
line1-2 : The prase ‘half a league’ is repeated 3 times . a league is a measurement for
distance . one league is about three miles (4.8km) . so , if half a league is about 2.4 km .
line 3-4 : The six hundred soliders on horseback ride half a league into the valley of death,
which place where death awaits the soldiers .
line 5-6 : The orders given to go forward and try to reach the enemy’s cannon . the
pronoun “he” refers to the brigade’s commander.
line7-8 : This is repeatation for lines 3and4, underlinding the fate of the six hundred
soldiers.
Meaning of lines (Verse 1 – lines 9-17)
The second verse highlights the men’s courage as they obey the command to ride
forward.
Line 9: The command is repeated but the commander is not identified
Line 10: The narrator asks a rhetorical question. ‘Dismayed’ means feelings sad or fearful.
Was any man among the six hundred unhappy or afraid?
Lines 11-12: Here is the answer to the question in line 10. ‘Not’ means no, none of the
soldiers are sad or fearful. Even though they know that the command to be change
forward is a mistake. This emphasises the soldiers’ loyalty and discipline. The person who is
responsible for this mistake is referred to as ‘someone’ but it is clear that it is a leader of
the army
Lines 13-15: The soldiers do their duty without asking for the reason behind the command.
Their duty is to do as they are told even if they have to die doing it. These lines tell us what
good soldiers the six hundred are. They are even willing to lay down their lives for their
country.
Meaning of lines (Verse 3– lines 18-26)
This verse provides a vivid description of what the soldiers face as they ride into the valley.
Lines 18-19: The soldiers are surrounded by gunfire on three sides-left, right and in front of
them. The first three lines start with the same word ‘cannon’ and effectively depict the
situation of the men being attacked from three directions.
Lines 21: The word ‘volleyed’ refers to cannons firing making a sound like thunder. This line
helps us imagine the atmosphere in the battlefield.
Lines 22-23: The men are violently attacked with bullets (shot) and explosives fired from the
cannons (shell). However, they ride on bravely as commanded to.
Lines 24-26: The refrain in the previous verses is changed in this verse. There are three lines and
‘the valley of Death’ is replaced by ‘the jaws of Death’ and ‘the mouth of hell’. It creates a
picture of the brigade being eaten up by a monster and going into a fiery hell that means
death
MAIN IDEAS
Duty, loyalty and discipline
Every one of the six hundred soldiers was loyal and
disciplined. The narrator informs us that the command to
charge into the valley was a mistake and this make us all the
more amazed at the soldiers’ loyalty and discipline.
Eventhough they know it is suicide to ride into the valley they
follow the order. No one of them ask for reason for the attack.
They just carry out their duty as soldiers and obey to their
leaders.
FACTS
• It happened on 25th October 1854 near the city of
Balaclava .
• The light brigade had been ordered to chase a
retreating Russian artillery company . poor
communication meant that they fought a larger and
more prepared army , and suffered heavy losses .
• About 107 of the 674 soldiers involved in the charged
were killed. Other British troops later died in hospital .
and many were taken prisoner by the Russian .
Predict of outcome
• lead a society which will obey to the instructions given .
• A good leader must know what they do because it is their duty
to make sure everyone is not in danger .
• Everyone has their own right to speak out their opinions.
• Think before you speak or give an instruction . Think about the
risk that will happen next either it is good or bad.
OPINIONS
• In our opinion, we should make a correct decision because it is our
responsibility to make sure everyone is not in dangerous

• We must be brave to speak out our opinion if we thinks something is

not correct
