ENGINEERING

HONOR
NILE PIONEERS CLUB
WHAT IS ENGINEERING?
Engineering is the application of scientific
knowledge to solving problems in the real world.
While science (physics, chemistry, biology, etc.)
allows us to gain an understanding of the World
and the Universe, Engineering enables
this understanding to come to life through
problem solving, designing and building things.
BRANCHES OF
ENGINEERING
CHEMICAL ENGINEERING
BRANCHES OF
ENGINEERING
ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

Study of electricity, electronics, and

electromagnetism and its uses
related to designing, testing, and
manufacturing electrical equipment
BRANCHES OF
ENGINEERING
CIVIL ENGINEERING

Sciences that involve the design,

construction, and maintenance of
structures such as bridges, buildings, and
tunnels. It also includes roads and
underground utilities like water, sanitary
sewer, storm sewer, natural gas etc.
BRANCHES OF
ENGINEERING
MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

Focuses on the usage of heat and

mechanical power as a power
source for machines and
mechanical systems.
ENGINEERING FUNCTIONS:
The branches indicate what the engineer works with; the functions describe
what he does. In order of decreasing emphasis on science, the major functions of
all engineering branches are the following:
• Research. The research engineer seeks new principles and processes by
ADDITIONAL employing mathematical and scientific concepts, experimental techniques, and
inductive reasoning.
DISCIPLINES OF
• Development. The development engineer applies the results of research to
ENGINEERING useful purposes. Ingenious and creative application of new knowledge may
result in a working model of a new electronics circuit, a chemical process, an
AEROSPACE ENGINEERING ACOUSTICAL ENGINEERING industrial machine, or a gadget of optronics.
OPTICAL ENGINEERING TRAFFIC ENGINEERING
• Design. In designing a structure or a product, the engineer selects methods,

specifies materials, and determines shapes to satisfy technical requirements
MATERIAL ENGINEERING INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING and to meet performance specification.
PROCESS ENGINEERING GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING
• Construction. The construction engineer is responsible for preparing the
ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING TEXTILE ENGINEERING site, determining procedures that will economically and safely yield the
STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING ENERGY ENGINEERING desired quality, directing the placement of materials, and organizing the
POWER ENGINEERING personnel and equipment.
One activity common to all engineering work is problem
solution. The problem may involve quantitative or
qualitative factors; it may be physical or economic; it may
require abstract mathematics or common sense.
RESPONSABILITIES OF Of great importance is the process of creative synthesis
AN ENGINEER. or design, putting ideas together to create a new and
optimum solution of the problem. Since the engineer
functions at the socio-technological “interface” (with
science and technology on one side and individuals and
communities on the other), he bears a unique
responsibility to decide on priorities, establish
performance criteria, select materials and processes, and
specify evaluation procedures.
ENGINEERING…He has the vision to conceive vast
projects, the talent to analyze them as integrated man-

machine-environment systems, and the ability to predict
their technical performance and their human impact.
The typical curriculum leading to the bachelor’s degree
is defined by series of courses.. General, education is
provided by a pattern of courses selected, from the
WHAT TYPE humanities and social sciences.
EDUCATION Basic science education includes mathematics, physics,
computer programming, and often statistics, chemistry,
and biology.
Engineering sciences include materials, mechanics,
thermodynamics, transfer and rate processes, electrical
science, electronics, and information processing.
HOW HAS THE By virtue of his knowledge, his skill, and his unique role
DISCIPLINE OF in society, the engineer must concern himself with the
ENGINEERING
results of technological progress such as its effect on the

physical environment and its social and economic impact.
SOCIETY?
A successful engineer is prepared for decision making
on complex problems in broad areas. He is skilled in the
use of sophisticated tools and creative in the
development of new techniques.
Discuss the biblical engineering marvels that illustrate
the art and importance of engineering.

REVERSE ENGINEEERS

• Origins in the analysis of hardware for commercial or military advantage.

• Companies acquire competitor's products and reverse engineer them to gain knowledge
they can use to better their own products or copy the technology.
• Captured weapons and defence systems are analyzed both to try and copy the weapon
or defense system and find ways to defeat it.

DIED: JANUARY 7, 1943, WYNDHAM NEW YORKER HOTEL, NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK, UNITED STATES

PROJECTS: ALTERNATING CURRENT, HIGH-VOLTAGE, HIGH-FREQUENCY POWER EXPERIMENTS

EDUCATION: GRAZ UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY(1875–1878), GYMNASIUM KARLOVAC(1870–1873)

NIKOLA TESLA WAS A SERBIAN-AMERICAN INVENTOR, ELECTRICAL ENGINEER, MECHANICAL
ENGINEER, PHYSICIST, AND FUTURIST WHO IS BEST KNOWN FOR HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE

QUOTES

• The present is theirs; the future, for which I really worked, is mine.
• The day science begins to study non-physical phenomena, it will make more progress in one
decade than in all the previous centuries of its existence.
• The scientists of today think deeply instead of clearly. One must be sane to think clearly, but one
can think deeply and be quite insane.
