We use figures of speech in “figurative language”

to add colour and interest, and to awaken the

imagination. Figurative language is everywhere,
from classical works like Shakespeare or the
Bible, to everyday speech, pop music and movies.
It makes the reader or listener use their
imagination and understand much more than plain
words.
He ran fast. (literal)
He ran like the wind. (figurative)
1.) Your love is like the sun that lights up
my whole world.

2.) Your love is like the river that

flows down through my veins.
Personification: It is a figure of speech in which
a thing, an idea or an animal is given human
attributes. The non-human objects are
portrayed in such a way that we feel they have
the ability to act like human beings.

Example:
The flowers danced in the gentle breeze.
The fire swallowed the whole trees on the forest.

The whisper of the wind soothes to relax in a weekend afternoon.

Hyperbole is the use of exaggeration as
a rhetorical device or figure of speech. It
may be used to evoke strong feelings or
to create a strong impression, but is not
meant to be taken literally.

Example:
I am so hungry, I could eat a horse.
on·o·mato·poe·ia \ˌä-nə-ˌmä-tə-ˈpē-ə, -ˌma-\
Is a word that phonetically imitates or suggests
the source of the sound that it describes.
