SIMPLE STRATEGIES OF LIGHTING
AMBIENT LIGHTING
Provides an
area with overall
illumination. Also
known as
ambient lighting,
general lighting
radiates a
comfortable level
of brightness,
enabling one to
see and walk
about safely.

TASK LIGHTING
Sheds light
on the tasks that a
person carries out
in a given space
such as reading,
sewing, computer
work, where a
brighter light is
required in a
smaller focal point
of the room.
TASK LIGHTING “Task

TRACK LIGHTING
PENDANT LIGHTING PORTABLE OR DESK LAMP
ACCENT LIGHTING
Used mainly to
focus on a specific point
of interest or to achieve
a desired effect. This
type of lighting gives the
impression of a larger
space effect; it is more
frequently used to
highlight an architectural
feature, a plant, a
sculpture or a collection
of objects.
ACCENT LIGHTING “Adds drama to a room
by creating visual
interest.”

Eliminates shadows to

Used to emphasize the

Either very desirable

LIGHT BULBS

LIGHT BULB
A glass bulb inserted into a
lamp or a socket in a ceiling, that
provides light by passing an
electric current through a
filament or a pocket of inert gas.
TYPES OF LIGHT BULBS

INCANDESCENT BULBS
Most commonly used light bulb and usually the least
expensive. This type of light has a warm, inviting quality and
is very complimentary to skin tones and psychologically
appealing.
Are available in either a clear or frosted
finish. There are three basic shapes:
• General (A)
• Globe (G)
• Decorative (Flame, teardrop and other shapes)

Can be used with a dimmer; however, they're not

as energy efficient as other options.
ADVANTAGES
INCANDESCENT BULBS • LIGHT QUALITY
• COST – LESS EXPENSIVE
• EASIER DISPOSAL – NON
TOXIC
• DIMMABLE

DISADVANTAGES
• SHORTER LAMP LIFE
• ENVIRONMENTAL – ENERGY
CONSUMPTION
• LIMITED COLOR OPTIONS
TYPES OF LIGHT BULBS

HALOGEN BULBS
A variation of incandescent. They give the
closest approximation of natural daylight,
known as "white light." Colors appear sharper
under halogen light and the bulbs can be
dimmed.

Most often halogen

bulbs are used in
under-cabinet lighting,
pendant lights and
recessed cans.
ADVANTAGES
• LIGHT QUALITY
HALOGEN BULBS • FULLY DIMMABLE
• INSTANT LIGHT
• COMPACT SIZE
• LONGER LAMP LIFE THAN
INSCANDESCENT BULB

DISADVANTAGES
• COSTLY THAN INCANDESCENT
• HEAT PRODUCTION
• SUBJECT TO SHATTER
• CANNOT BE DIRECTLY
TOUCHED
TYPES OF LIGHT BULBS
FLUORESCENT BULBS
It is a daylight-equivalent.
Fluorescent bulbs work well to
light large areas like basements
or attics.

There are many types of

fluorescents on the market: warm
ones, cool ones and special-
colored ones, and they typically
produce more light and last longer
than incandescent.
COMPACT
FLUORESCENT BULBS
Designed to replace an
incandescent lamp;
some types fit into light
fixtures formerly used for
incandescent lamps. The
lamps use a tube which is
curved or folded to fit
into the space of an
incandescent bulb.
FLUORESCENT BULBS
DISADVANTAGES
FLUORESCENT BULBS • CONTAINS MERCURY
• BUZZING SOUND
• FLICKERING
ADVANTAGES
• COLOR ACCURACY
• COLOR VARIETY
• COMPACT SIZE (CFLs)
• LONGER LAMP LIFE THAN
INSCANDESCENT BULB
• WIDE LIGHT COVERAGE
• ENERGY EFFICIENT
• COST EFFECTIVE
TYPES OF LIGHT BULBS
LEDs (LIGHT EMITTING DIODES)
A lighting technology that is long-
lasting and extremely energy-
efficient. Emit almost no heat and
they thrive in cold locations.
They provide only directional light, not
diffused light, making them ideal for
under-counter task lighting, but not
general room illumination.

Great for outdoor, landscape, recessed,

task and decorative lighting

• EFFICIENCY
• DURABLE DISADVANTAGES

• ECOLOGY • TEMPERATURE SENSITIVITY
• COLOR VARIETY

MORE LIGHT, LESS ENERGY

To determine the
efficiency of a light
bulb, you need to
know two things. One is
the amount of light that
the light bulb puts out
and the other is the
amount of electricity it
consumes to produce
that much light.

LIGHT EFFICIENCY FORMULA:

LUMENS
WATT
WHY DO LUMENS PER WATT MATTER?

The more efficient a light bulb is, the more

energy it saves.

• Helps cut down on the amount of energy

that has to be produced
• Helps reduce greenhouse emissions
• Slow the warming of our atmosphere
CHOOSING THE RIGHT BULB
Considerations for choosing the right bulb:
LUMENS
The higher the lumens, the brighter the light.
COLOR
The lower the Kelvin number, the more
yellow the light, and the higher the Kelvin,
the bluer the light.
USE
LED bulbs in hard-to-reach fixtures
CFLs are great in kitchens, hallways and
bathrooms
