OBJECTIVE At the end of the presentation you should be able to: define the following terms relating to digital media: Audio, Bandwidth, Broadband. Capture, content integration, convergence, compression. Digital Media, digital rights management, download media. Frame, GIF, HDTV, HTML, hypermedia, hypertext, IP, JPEG, linear editing. Media, multicasting, new media, pixels, stream, vector graphics, webcast, XML. AUDIO Audio relates to sound files produced or used in digital products such as songs, tracks, background music, and recorded voice or capturing of sounds for use of sound effects these maybe used in production of videos. BANDWIDTH AND BROADBAND Bandwidth – This is the transmission capacity of a communication channel. E.g. Narrowband, Broadband and Voiceband. Flow uses Broadband to push Voice, Video and Data in a single cable/media. Measured in bps, KBps, Kilobytes per second. 100 MBps. Broadband – This is the high capacity transmission techniques used in a wide range of frequency which enable a large number of messages to be communicated simultaneously. Capture – This is used to collect, gather, access information for digital productions. Content integration – This is the collection of movements, information and data in several formats as one. It is combing digital elements/materials used in production of digital output. Convergence – Convergence is the coming together of various technologies and formats of data/information for production purposes. Compression – Compression refers to making file size for storage much smaller than their actual file size. E.g. Using Winrar, Zip, 7zip. WHAT IS DIGITAL MEDIA? Digital media is a term that widely covers a large number of topics including entertainment, gaming, digital content, streaming, and authoring. Digital media studies rely on both conceptual and creative knowledge. Digital Media is the study of how to edit, or mix music or pictures including video using graphics software. DM allow us to generate or create movies, modify and create images and drawings as well as incorporating music and video into work produced. It also involves the use of Graphic designing and video production skills using software. WHAT IS DIGITAL RIGHTS MANAGEMENT? DRM refers to the collection of systems that are used to protect the copyrights of digital media. DRM seeks to prevent unauthorized redistribution of digital media and restrict the ways consumers can copy content they've purchased. DOWNLOAD MEDIA Download media is elements or materials that is taken off the internet or a source server to be stored on the local computer for continued use in digital production or personal use. Download media can also be obtained from the devices used to capture the digital material. Such as sound recording on cell phones or tablets or video and pictures being captured. FRAME, GIF AND HDTV Frame – A frame is a graphical panel enclosed in a display window that encloses a self contained section of data/information. GIF – Graphical Interchange Format:- a compressed image file format used when storing graphic files. HDTV - High Definition Television:- a television that provides a higher resolution that a standard television. HDTV supports the viewing of High Definition (HD) channels now offered by Cable providers. JPEG – Joint Photographic Expert Graphic:- a commonly used method of lousy compressing for digital images, particularly for those images produced by digital photography. HTML, HYPERMEDIA AND HYPERTEXT HTML – Hypertext Markup Language:- this is a scripting language used to write web pages using codes. HYPERTEXT Hypertext – Hypertext is the creating of linkage of objects, images, pictures, etc. which uses a special database systems to connect to these via the internet web browsers. HYPERTEXT AND HYPERMEDIA Hypermedia – Hypermedia is an extension to what is known as hypertext, or the ability to open new Web pages by clicking text links on a Web browser. Hypermedia extends upon this by allowing the user to click images, movies, graphics and other media apart from text to create a nonlinear network of information. Hypermedia allows links to be embedded in multimedia elements like images and videos. IP AND LINEAR EDITING IP – Internet Protocol The Internet Protocol (IP) is the method or protocol by which data is sent from one computer to another on the Internet. Each computer (known as a host) on the Internet has at least one IP address that uniquely identifies it from all other computers on the Internet. It is the standard form by which computers communicate in order to browse the Internet. Standard protocols are important for web pages and networks to communicate. Linear Editing – This is a post production process of selecting, arranging and modifying images and sound in a pre-determined order. MEDIA AND NEW MEDIA Media – This is communication through television, radio and internet for the public transmission of information. New media – this refers to on demand access to content, anytime, anywhere on any digital device as well as interactive user feedback along with creative participation. Flow on demand, HBO on demand, etc. Pay Per View TV. MULTICASTING AND XML Multicasting – This is the process of transmitting signals and messages to a select group of recipients. XML – Extensible Mark up language – a markup language that defines a set of rules for encoding documents and information that are both human and machine readable. PIXELS AND VECTOR GRAPHICS Pixels – a minute area of illumination on a display screen, one of many from which an image is composed. Picture elements on screen that forms image. The greater the # of pixels per dot inch, is the higher the resolution will be. E.g. 1040 x 1080. Vector Graphics – This is the use of geometrical primitives such as points, lines, curves and all shapes. All of which are based on mathematical expression which is used to produce images in computer graphics. STREAM AND WEBCAST Stream – This is an internet based digital distribution, digital rights management, multiplayer and social networking plat form for online content to be watched or listened. Online radio and tv. Webcast - This is a media presentation distributed over the internet using streaming media technology to share single content source to stimulate many listeners/viewers. Best used by television and radio companies to share their news to wider listeners online.
