Safety Policy

Working safely is everyone’s responsibility and is a condition of


employment with Synovos.

We are dedicated to the principle that all accidents and


injuries are preventable. We can achieve this objective by
following all Safety, Health and Environmental rules and by
practicing the principles of our Safety Program. These
principles demand that we always ask ourselves how the
activities we are engaged in, at work or at home, can be
performed safely. By “seeing” Safety in all that we do we can
achieve our objective of ZERO incidents or injuries.

Personal Obligations
OSHA General Duty Clause

General Duty Clause of the United States Occupational Safety and


Health Act (Federal OSHA) states:[1]

29 U.S.C. § 654, 5(a)1: Each employer shall furnish to each of his employees
employment and a place of employment which are free from recognized hazards
that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm to his
employees.“

The 29 U.S.C. § 654, 5(a)2: Each employer shall comply with occupational safety
and health standards promulgated under this act.

29 U.S.C. § 654, 5(b): Each employee shall comply with occupational safety and
health standards and all rules, regulations, and orders issued pursuant to this Act
which are applicable to his own actions and conduct.

This Clause is Legally Enforceable!

OSHA Violations and Penalties

Willful Violation – A violation that the employer knowingly commits or commits


with plain indifference to the law. The employer either knows that what he or she is
doing constitutes a violation, or is aware that a hazardous condition existed and
made no reasonable effort to eliminate it. Penalties of up to $125,000 may be
proposed for each willful violation A fine of up to $250,000 for an individual, or
$500,000 for a corporation, may be imposed for a criminal conviction.

Program Requirements

• All employees are responsible for reviewing the Synovos Safety Manual and
completing safety training assigned to them in the Synovos Learning Center. A
copy of the Safety Manual is posted in the Safety section within Sharepoint.

• Supervisors are responsible for ensuring that their employees review the Safety
Manual and safety slides and take the quizzes assigned to them in the Learning
Center.

• Operations Managers should consult with their client safety manager


to determine if there is client required safety training that must be
taken. Client rules must be followed at all times. If there is a conflict in client
and SSI guidance please contact the Sr. Director of Safety and Quality at
safety@synovos.com
Program Requirements

• Each employee must be provided a copy of the Employee Safety Handbook


during their onboarding process. The Handbook with instructions can also be
found within the Safety section of Sharepoint.

• An annual hazard assessment must be performed at each location as


scheduled in the Synovos Learning Center.The checklist is provided
with the training requirement but can also be found within the Safety
section of Sharepoint. Hazards that cannot be immediately corrected
must be documented and tracked as corrective actions in STOP
DataPro®.

• Tool Box Talks must be conducted weekly. A list of topics and training
information can be found within the Safety section of Sharepoint
Program Requirements
• Every employee is required to conduct four STOP® Observations per
month. STOP® training is provided in the Synovos Learning Center.

• Safety training as assigned in the Synovos Learning Center is mandatory


training, and as such, deemed a requirement of employment. Failure to
complete safety training is considered a performance issue and subject
to progressive discipline as outlined in Synovos’s Progressive Discipline
Policy.

• Temporary employees hired for a period of less than 60 days are


provided a copy of the Synovos Safety Handbook, and trained by their
supervisor on the handbook’s contents.The temporary employee must
sign acknowledgement of the training as indicated in the handbook.

• Temporary employees hired for more than 60 days, or who exceed 60


days of continuous employment are required to be enrolled in the full
safety training program for their employment position.
Incident Reporting

• All injuries and near misses must be reported to


safety@Synovos.com and hr@Synovos.com following the
guidelines in the Incident Reporting Checklist kept in
Sharepoint

• The Incident Reporting Form, and Near Miss Form are located within
the Safety section of Sharepoint
