-Started with the problem then brainstormed
how to bridge the language/academic gap
an online app and weighed the technology available
and use in the classroom
-Decided on a device that would have an audio input
for students to speak into and an interactive screen
to translate the language into English
 Success Principle:
• Simple - to help students that have a barrier because of translation or writing needs
• Unexpected - with an app AND/OR a pen
• Concrete - use the app and/ or pen to get an assignment completed at the same time as peers in
the classroom
• Credible - teachers can relate that see their students struggling
• Emotion - helping a student grow
• Stories - Ex. Houston in 1st grade was “too tired” to do his writing.

• This was causing a behavior, disruption to the class, and not completing the work on time,
benefit from speaking his thoughts into the device rather than being distracted by how much he
had to write. = increased independence/ decreased behaviors

(A child speaks in their native language and then the device
translates and transcribes their thoughts in English)
