What is a Language?
A language is a system of

used by people to communicate.
Speech community is a group
of people who speak the same
language
Words are symbols used by a

Characteristics of
Language
Language is arbitrary: members should agree on word
symbols

Language is abstract: existing only in mind

Language changes over time: creation of new
words

Using language appropriately is

vital
to communicate accurately, clearly, and
vividly.

The Relationship Between
Language and Meaning
Semantics:
 You should know the meanings of
words and how to use them

 Good speakers have respect for

language and know how it works.

 Words are the tools of a

speaker’s craft. COMMUNICATE! Verderber,
Verderber & Sellnow-14th edition,
2014 International Edition -USA 4
Denotation: the direct, explicit
meaning a speech community
formally gives a word.
Connotation: the feelings or
evaluations we associate with a
word.
Syntactic context: the position of
a word in a sentence and the other
words around it.

The message that counts is the message that is

understood, not the one you intended.
