Problem
In a gas turbine power plant, working on the Brayton
cycle with a regenerator of 75% effectiveness, the air
at the inlet to the compressor is at 0.1 MPa, 30oC, the
pressure ratio is 6, and the maximum cycle
temperature is 900oC. If the temperature and
compressor have each an efficiency of 80%, find the
percentage increase in the cycle efficiency due to
regeneration.

Problem
A gas turbine plant operates on the brayton cycle
between Tmin = 300K and Tmax = 1073K. Find the
maximum work done per kg of air, and the
corresponding cycle efficiency. How does this
efficiency compares with the Carnot cycle efficiency
operating between the same two temperature?

Problem
● In an ideal Brayton cycle, air from the atmosphere at
1 atm, 300 K is compressed to 6 atm and the
maximum cycle temperature is limited to 1100K by
using a large air-fuel ratio. If the heat supplied is 100
MW, find
○ The thermal efficiency of the cycle
○ Work ratio
○ power ratio
○ power output
○ exergy flow rate of the exhaust gas leaving the
turbine

Problem
● The following refer to a stationary gas turbine:
○ Compressor inlet temperature 311 K,
○ Compressor pressure ratio 8,
○ Combustion chamber pressure drop 5% of inlet
pressure.
○ Turbine inlet 1367 K
○ Turbine exit and compressor inlet pressures are
atmospheric.

Problem Continued
There exists a facility to take air from the compressor exit
for use in cooling the turbine. Find the percentage of air
that may be taken from the compressor for this purpose so
that the overall cycle efficiency drops by 5% from that of
the case of no usage of compressed air for cooling of
turbine. For simplicity, assume the following
a. Take properties of gas through the turbine as those of air
b. Addition of cooling air to the turbine and addition of fuel
to the combustion chamber do not affect the turbine
power
c. Compresor and turbine efficiencies are 0.87 and 0.90
respectively

Problem
In a gas turbine plant, the ratio of Tmax/Tmin is fixed.
Two arrangements of components are to be
investigated (a) single-stage compression followed by
expansion in two turbines of equal pressure ratios
with reheat to the maximum cycle temperature, and
(b) compressor in two compressors of equal pressure
ratios, with intercooling to the minimum cycle
temperature, followed by single stage expansion. if ηC
and ηT are the compressor and turbine efficiencies,
show that the optimum specific output is obtained at
the same overall pressure ratio for each arrangement.

Problem continued
If ηC and ηT is 0.85 and 0.9 respectively, and Tmax/Tmin
is 3.5 determine the above pressure ratio for
optimum specific output and show that with
arrangement (a) the optimum output exceeds that of
arrangement (b) by about 11%.
