THE CASE

Mr. Y is a new teacher in his first 90 days of employment in his district. He has
made friends with many staff members and invited them to visit his social
network page. On his website, Mr. Y has listed quite a bit of personal
information. One of his colleagues visited the site and became very
concerned because the site included a statement that Mr. Y was attracted
to young girls, stating “the younger the better.”

Should the colleague notify the principal of this information?

Decision: Report Mr. Y

What Can the School do? Possible Actions to take:

-The school will not likely be able to fire Mr. Y on the spot without concrete
evidence of his doing something wrong...other than being totally disgusting.
-They could however decide not to renew his contract and would not have
to give cause.
-The school will most likely keep an eye on Mr. Y for non-social media
evidence that he may harm students.
-If asked for a recommendation from another school for Mr. Y in the future,
they would not be able to alert the new school to situation at hand.
