OBJECTIVES

On completion of this period, you would be able to know

• Explain the methods of collecting & conveying solid

waste

9C 605.38 2
RECAP

• what is solid waste ?

• what are the various types of solids ?

9C 605.38 3
EFFECTS OF SOLID WASTE POLLUTION

Indiscriminate disposal of solid waste into environment causes

pollution of

• Soil

• Surface water resources

• Ground water resources

9C 605.38 4
Nuisance due to Solid waste

Diseases caused due to human food contamination

through flies which breed on solid waste are :

• Dysentery

• Diarrhea

• Amoebic dysentery

9C 605.38 6
Rats breeding on solid wastes cause

• Plague

• Solmenellosis

• Endemic typhus diseases through bite

9C 605.38 7
Solid wastes choke drains and gully pits

resulting in

• Water logging which in turn results in

• Breeding of Mosquitoes due to which there is a danger

of malaria, dengue

Disposal of Solid Waste

• There are mainly two steps in the disposal of solids waste

1. Collection of solid wastes

2. Methods of disposal of Solid Wastes

9C 605.38 10
COLLECTION OF REFUSE

The dry refuse garbage etc. are generally collected in Bins

Different methods of solid wast collection are :

• One bin system

• Two bin system

• Three bin system

9C 605.38 11
ONE BIN SYSTEM

• Dust bins with covers are placed in streets at suitable points

• Dry refuse is thrown into the bins by inhabitants

• This refuse is cleared by Municipal Staff through vehicles to

the disposal sites at periodical intervals

PROBLEMS WITH ONE BIN SYSTEM

Unsanitary conditions around the bin due to :

• People don't take care in throwing the refuse in to bins

• Removal of refuse from the bin is not being properly attended

• So it is a failure in our country

• Segregation of waste is not possible and hence disposal is a

problem

9C 605.38 15
TWO BIN SYSTEM

• Every house is provided with two metal or Plastic bins with covers

• Garbage is collected in one bin and remaining refuse in other bin

• Municipal workers collect this garbage and refuse from bins in

separate trucks once or twice in a week

• Garbage is collected at frequent intervals than refuse

• Garbage can be utilized for the cattle feed

9C 605.38 16
TWO BIN SYSTEM contd…

• Other refuse can be disposed suitably

• The success of this system depends upon the prompt collection

the refuse from houses

Three bin system
It is similar to two bin system but there will be three bins with
covers

• One bin receives garbage

• Second bin receives inorganic ash and grit

• Third one is used one for other rubbish

• The refuse in the bins is collected regularly once or twice in a

week and disposed separately

9C 605.38 20
Advantage of three bin system

• Garbage can be utilized for Cattle feed

• Recyclable materials such as paper, plastic, metals etc. can

be salvaged

• Remaining refuse can be disposed suitably

9C 605.38 21
FACTORS AFFECTING THE COLLECTION OF
REFUSE

• Location of Dust bin

• Type of bin system

• Frequency of collection

• Population density

9C 605.38 22
FACTORS AFFECTING THE COLLECTION
OF REFUSE cond..

• Number of workers per each truck

• Time of Collection

• Collection routes

• Cost of collecting

9C 605.38 23
SUMMARY

• If solid waste is not collected & disposed, it will pollute soil

& water sources, cause / spread various diseases and clog
the open drains
• Solid waste can be collected by :
1. One bin system
2. Two bin system
3. Two bin system

9C 605.38 24
QUIZ

1. Garbage can be utilized for________

[Ans. Cattle feed]

2. In two bin system one bin is used for collecting

__________ and second bin is used for collecting _________
