MAJOR EVENT
In 1994, from April to July, the
Hutu majority murdered
approximately 800,000
people, mostly the Tutsi
minority. This started due to
death of Rwandan Hutu
President Juvenal
Habyarimana allegedly (as
Hutu extremists had blamed)
by Paul Kagme, a Tutsi rebel
group leader and now the
Rwandan President. However,
before that, there were
tensions between the
cultures.
RWANDA’S FILM INDUSTRY
 The film industry in Rwanda is
relatively new. It started with Eric
Kabera, a Tutsi, who in 2001, made an
award winning (won best
cinematography in India) film
concerning the horrors of the genocide
in Rwanda called “100 Days”. His
success helped him to achieve the
creation of the first film festival in
Rwanda in 2005, called “Hillywood”
because it stood for cinema in the hills
of Rwanda. Since then, several film
makers and films from Rwanda have
had the opportunity to flourish,
especially the rising of women
directors.
