Cultural and ethical issue of
assessment rubric and content
Bias, which one is easy to measure/mark and document

Rubrics can place more emphasis upon the technical aspect of

students’ work

Turning projects and papers into exercises- simply following

the rules & addressing the required elements of the rubric

Turning the role of the teacher into that of grader, leaving less
room for the teacher to be an authentic “reader” of students’
work
When tied to points, they can result in overall point values for
students’ work that do not accurately represent students’ learning,
progress, or competence

Decreasing the time & reflection needed for a teacher to assess

students’ work- spending less time with the students’ ideas

Turning assessment into a deficiency-approach to education,

focusing feedback on student weaknesses & errors. This leads
to learners who complete work just to avoid errors and/or to
perform for the teacher
