Material Designation System
ASTM ASTM Stand for American Society for Testing and Material.
The basis of classification of ASTM is Manufacturing Method.

ASTM A 403 Gr. WP 304L Carbon Content

L – Low Carbon
AISI No H – Heat Resistance

WP—Weldable Pipe Form, Further A, B, C

Arbitrary
A—Ferrous metals are grade based on composition.
Number
B—Nonferrous metals WC—Weldable Cast Further, A, B, C
C—Cementitious, ceramic, concrete are grade based on composition.
D—Miscellaneous materials mostly Plastic TYPE F —Forged
E—Miscellaneous subjects Gr. P —Pipe
F—End‐use materials and products for CL T —Tube
specific applications TP —Tube & Pipe
G—Corrosion, deterioration, weathering, C —Start with C means Cast Stainless
durability, and degradation of Steel.
materials and products LF —AlLoy Steel Forged.
LC —AlLoy Steel Cast
Material Designation System
UNS UNS Stand for Unified Numbering System.
The UNS establishes 18 series of numbers for metals and alloys .
Each UNS number consists of a single letter-prefix of ALFA Character followed by five digits
Numeric Characters.

Back to College – Few Definitions
Elasticity
The property of a material due to which it comes to its original shape after the removal of load is called elasticity.
There is a certain limit of every material up to which it can regain its original shape. This limit is called Elastic Limit.

Plasticity
The property of a material due to which it is permanently deformed (re-shaped) on the application of load, without
any rupture is called plasticity.

Hardness
It is the property of a material due to which it resists wear, abrasion and indentation.
Also hardness is the property which enables to cut the other material.
