Classroom Discourse Patterns: A Final Thought

• Teachers continue to dominate the talk that goes on in classrooms by

presenting information and giving directions for students to follow.
• When teacher ask student, and students do not answer immediately,
the teacher asks another question or calls on another student.
• Teacher dominance of classroom discourse patterns and the rapid
pace of this discourse are harmful.

Using different discourse patterns such as think-pair-share will produce more and better student thinking.
