Addition and Subtraction(Class IV)

Class 4, Addition and Subtraction

BASIC CONCEPTS
• The numbers which we add are called Addends.
• We start adding from ones and add lakhs at the end .
• When we change the order of the addends, the sum remains
the same.
• When zero is added to a number or a number is added to
zero the sum is the number itself.
• When two numbers are subtracted the answer is called
difference
• Minuend is the number from which we subtract.
• Subtrahend is the number to be subtracted.
• To check the difference ; Sum of the subtrahend and the
difference should be equal to the minuend.

Class 4, Addition and Subtraction
Addition(5 and 6 Digit Numbers)

1
5 3 4 4 1 0
2 3 9 3 5
5 5 8 3 4 5
Example
• Find the sum of 43428 and 46325.
Solution:
Arrange the digits of the addends in
columns and add as usual.
1
43428 → Addend
+46325 → Addend
89753 → Sum
• The sum is 89753.
Example
• Find the sum of 669702, 154789 and 113465.
Solution:
Arrange the digits of the addends in columns
and add as usual.
11111
669702 → Addend
154789 → Addend
+ 113465 → Addend
937956 → Sum
• The sum is 937956.
Practice
• Find the sum of
a) 4,38,755 + 1,62,483

b) 1,60,345 + 2,34,582 + 82,430

Class 4, Addition and Subtraction

Properties of addition
• The sum remains the same if the order of the addends
is changed.
75,312 + 12,313 = 87,625

12,313 + 75,312 = 87,625

In both cases, the sum remains the same.

Class 4, Addition and Subtraction

Properties of addition
• The sum remains the same even after changing
the order of the addends.
2+5+8 = 15 5+2+8 = 15
2+8+5 = 15 8+2+5 = 15
5+8+2 = 15 8+5+2 = 15

Class 4, Addition and Subtraction

Properties of addition
• If zero is added to a number, the sum is
the number itself.
7+0=7

0 + 52,341 = 52,341

Class 4, Addition and Subtraction

Practice
Fill in the blanks
1) 76 + ____ + 92 = ____ + 92 + 15
2) 75, 312 + 0 = _______
3) 0 + 2,571 = 2,571 + ______
4) 723 + _____ = 723
5) 45,793 + 15,911 = ______ + 45,793

Class 4, Addition and Subtraction

Adding numbers with zero at
ones, tens and hundred
places(Orally)
• 40 + 50 = 90

• 200 + 400 + 300 = 900

• 1000 + 3000 + 4000 = 8000

Class 4, Addition and Subtraction

Practice
• Add
1) 70 + 20 = ______
2) 20 + 60 + 10 = ______
3) 100 + 300 + 200 = _______
4) 2,000 + 3,000 = _______
5) 13,000 + 3,000 + 13,000 = ________

Class 4, Addition and Subtraction

Word Problems
There are 27,425 male and 24,639 female
primary teachers in a city. Find the total
number of teachers in the city.

Solution:
Number of male teachers = 27425
Number of female teachers = + 24639
Number of teachers = 52064

So, total number of primary teachers

in a city = 52,064
Class 4, Addition and Subtraction
Practice
There are 54,453 men, 26,725 women and
11,052 children in a town. Find the population
of the town?

Class 4, Addition and Subtraction

SUBTRACTION
Terms Used
• The larger number from which smaller
number is subtracted is called the
minuend.
• The smaller number which is subtracted is
called subtrahend.
• The resulting number is called the
difference.

Class 4, Addition and Subtraction

Subtraction(5 Digit Numbers)

3 4 2 9 1 9
Example
• Subtract 428697 from 746859
Solution:
Arrange the digit of the minuend and
subtrahend in columns and subtract as usual.
746859 → Minuend
- 428697 → Subtrahend
318162 → Difference
• The difference is 318162.
Class 4, Addition and Subtraction
To check the difference
• Sum of the subtrahend and the difference
should be equal to the minuend.

Subtrahend + Difference = Minuend

Class 4, Addition and Subtraction

Subtract 4,28,697 from 7,46,859
and check the answer
746859 → Minuend
- 428697 → Subtrahend
318162 → Difference
• The difference is 318162.
• Check
428697 → Subtrahend
+318162 → Difference
_ 746859 → Minuend
Class 4, Addition and Subtraction
Subtrahend + Difference = Minuend
Practice
• Subtract and check the answers:
a) 9,347 – 1,251
