ABSTRACT

Nowadays composite plays an important role in modern engineering field. Hence there
is a great need for formation of composite materials. Hence to form composite
material, there is in need of compressing machine to attain the required properties by
compressing multiple layers into a single layer. In our project, the compressing is
obtained by using scissor jack with which we can obtain high compressive force at
low energy level and at low cost. We can also measure the load acting over the
composite material during formation. Multiple composite materials can be compressed
at the same time by using multiple moulds one over
other.
INTRODUCTION

Composites are used by us almost every day, if we take a look around they are almost everywhere and
have been around since the beginning of the human civilization when people used to make bricks from mud
reinforced with straw. Some present day examples for use of composite materials are tennis racket, golf clubs,
cars and planes.

Now a days engineer prefers composite material instead of steel because composite materials are generally
stronger, lighter and much more resistant to extreme temperature. Aeronautics industries are using composite
material for aircraft parts that are tougher and more efficient than conventional parts. The critical goal of the
aeronautic space industry for using composite material is ‘The reduction of weight combined with strength’ or ‘the
reduction of weight and saving precious fuel’.

In order to form a layer form in composite, it has to be compressed. This compression is given by our
composite compression machine using scissor jack.

RUBBER COMPRESSION MACHINE

Compression Molding is the original production method for molding rubber. It is ideal for low
to medium production volumes and is a particularly useful molding process for molding gaskets, seals, O-
rings, and large, bulky parts. It is a widely used, efficient and economical production method for
many products, particularly low production volumes of medium to large parts and higher cost materials .
TRANSFER MOULDING

Transfer molding is a manufacturing process where casting material is forced into a mold.
Transfer molding is different from compression moulding in that the mold is enclosed [Hayward] rather
than open to the fill plunger resulting in higher dimensional tolerances and less environmental impact.
Compared to injection molding, transfer molding uses higher pressures to uniformly fill the mold cavity.
DESIGN CALCULATION:

STEELPLATE:
Size = 0.3*0.3 m

Area of plate = 0.09 m2

Thickness = 0.004 m

Density = 8125 kg/m3

Weight = 2.925kg

Maximum stress plate can with stand = load / area

= 5400 / (0.004*0.3)

= 4.83 MPa
SCISSOR JACK:

Maximum height = 0.03 m

Maximum breadth = 0.036m

Maximum load it can lift = 0.6 ton

= 600 kg

Maximum Force acting = mass *

gravity

= 600*9.81 N

= 5400 N
