Analyzing Population Patterns
 What is a Census?

 A census – a survey of population figures taken by a

country’s national government, usually every 5 – 10
years.

 Why do we do a Census?
 So we can predict the services a population will need ie
roads, hospitals, schools

What Factors That Affect Where
People Live?
 Climate – avoid extreme weather
 Trade (Close to US border – biggest trading partner)
 Recreation – Live near a river or lake i.e. Cottage
 Along coasts – people like being near water
 Near natural resources – forests, mines, fish
 Urban areas – employment in cities
 Reserves – area of land set aside by government for
Natives to leave and maintain culture

How Crowded is Canada?
 Population density is the measure of the number per
unit area.
 It is commonly represented as people per kilometer
square.
 It gives an idea as to how much space is used up by
how many people.

What is Demography?

Demography – numerical study of the

characteristics, trends, and issues of a population.
•Statistics Canada – An organization set up by the
government to collect data on the people of Canada

1. Birth Rate – the number
of children born in an area
for every 1000 people

COPY
2. Death Rate – the number of people who die in an area
for every 1000 people
3. Immigration – the process of moving into a country
from another country
4. Emigration – the process of moving out of a country to
another country
FYI
 Migration is the movement into and out of an area!!!
•What are 2 factors that increase population are:
• Birth Rate
• Immigration

•What are 2 factors that decrease population are:

• Death Rate
• Emigration

•Using these factors we can create a formula to calculate

how much a population has grown.
Natural Increase Rate = Birth Rate – Death Rate

Net Migration = Immigration Rate – Emigration Rate

Population Change = Natural Increase + Net Migration

(Birth – Death ) + (Immigration – Emigration)
Population Growth Rate
 is the increase in a country’s population
during a period of time.

 usually one year, expressed as a percentage of the

population at the start of that period.

 It reflects the number of births and deaths during the

period and the number of people migrating to and
from a country.

Population Growth Rate
 Canada’s population growth rate went down after 1961

Why?

 Women Working
 Smaller families
 Restrictions on immigrations
 Trying to accommodate for current population
