WHY ARE WE HERE? – SCHEDULE
o First of all, thank you!
o Relationship building, what we have already and what the goal is
o Recognize your child’s growth and further potential

o Schedule
o What makes a great reader
o Data graphs
o Tools to use at home
o Practice
o Phonemic Awareness
o Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate
individual sounds-phonemes--in spoken words. Before children learn to read
print, they need to become more aware of how the sounds in words work.
o Phonics
o Phonics is a way of teaching reading where your child is taught to read
letters or groups of letters by saying the sound(s) they represent. Children
can then start to read words by blending the sounds together to make a
word.
o Vocabulary Development
o Vocabulary is the knowledge of meaning of words. Generally there are
two kinds of vocabulary; reading and verbal. Often, a person’s verbal
vocabulary is larger than their reading vocabulary, especially when they are
first beginning to read.
o Fluency
o Fluency is the ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression.
In order to understand what they read, children must be able to
read fluently whether they are reading aloud or silently. When reading
aloud, fluent readers read in phrases and add intonation appropriately.
o Comprehension
o Reading comprehension is the ability to read text, process it, and
understand its meaning.
