What is the Convention on Biological

Diversity?
 Convention on Biological Diversity, also called
Biodiversity Treaty, international treaty designed
to promote the conservation of biodiversity and
to ensure the sustainable use and equitable
sharing of genetic resources.

 The Convention was opened for signature on 5


June 1992 at the United Nations Conference on
Environment and Development (the Rio Earth
Summit). It entered into force on 29 December
1993. The Philippine government ratified the
Convention on 12 June 1992.
Objectives of the Convention

 The objectives of this Convention, to be pursued in


accordance with its relevant provisions, are the
conservation of biological diversity,, the sustainable
use of its components and the fair and equitable
sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilization of
genetic resources, including by appropriate access to
genetic resources and by appropriate transfer of
relevant technologies, taking into account all rights
over those resources and to technologies, and by
appropriate funding

What is Biological Diversity?

 "Biological diversity" means the variability


among living organisms from all sources
including, inter alia, terrestrial, marine and
other aquatic ecosystems and the
ecological complexes of which they are
part: this includes diversity within species,
between species and of ecosystems.

How does it work?

 Each Contracting Party shall, in accordance with


its particular conditions and capabilities:
(a) Develop national strategies, plans or
programmes for the conservation and sustainable
use of biological diversity or adapt for this purpose
existing strategies, plans or programmes which shall
reflect, inter alia, the measures set out in this
Convention relevant to the Contracting Party
concerned; and

(b) Integrate, as far as possible and as


appropriate, the conservation and
sustainable use of biological diversity into
relevant sectoral or cross-sectoral plans,
programmes and policies.

What has the Phil. done to comply?

 CBD National Report for 2014 (5th) The report analyzes


efforts of the government in addressing the threats to the
country’s biodiversity at all levels, for the period of 2009-
2013.
 Removing Barriers on the Management of Invasive Alien
Species on Production and Protection Forest in the
Philippines
 Preparation of the Philippine Biodiversity Strategy and Action
Plan
What has the Phil. done to comply?

 Yearly celebration of the International Day for Biological


Diversity

 Maintenance of the Philippine Clearing House Mechanism


(CHM) on Biodiversity.
 Establishment of Protected Areas in Terrestrial and Marine
Ecosystems
 Various Administrative Orders that mandate sustainable use
of the country's biodiversity
What has the Phil. done to comply?

 On the 13th of June 2016, DENR released an


administrative order adopting the Philippine
Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (PBSAP) from
2015-2028 based on the NBSAP submitted to the
CBD Secretariat. Next steps include rolling-out the
PBSAP implementation at the national and local
levels.
