• According to Kamus Dewan Edisi Ketiga,
diversity means various types while socio-
culture is defined as a community relationship
with a culture that encompasses the way of
life, customs and so on. Therefore, socio-
cultural diversity can be defined as a
community that has cultural differences that
live together in the same area.
1. Prejudice between teacher and
student culture
Pupils carry their own distinctive cultures
Teachers who bring their own culture into
the
Pupils differ in terms of communication,
social values and intellectual, physical and
world view
The existence of stereotypes among multi-
racial students
2. The Curriculum
• The national school does not make the mother
tongue of the Chinese and Indian as a
compulsory subject, as a result the parents of
the races are less interested in sending their
children to national schools

* Now Tamil and Mandarin have been introduced

at national schools to bridge the educational gap
between races.
3. Social

low, medium and high.
• It is due to educational outcomes and family socioeconomic
status.

Suburbs types of employment and education views

• More exposed to multicultural environment
5. Gender Stereotype
Example of gender stereotype
• Only boys can be the leader
• Girls have less ability than boys
• Boys given more attention by the teachers
• Boys often labelled as ‘problematic students’
• Boys weak at language but good at calculation
and vice versa
6. Racial and Religion Animosity
• Some students are still have the hatred towards
other races and religion.
• Example of racial and religion animosity in
Malaysia
– Non-Muslim pupils were told not to eat in the canteen
during Ramadan so as not to offend Muslim pupils
who fast.
– Controversy sparked by the blogging couple who asked
Muslims to break fast with bak kut teh, a pork rib dish.
– The burning of Malay language bibles which use the
word Allah for God.
As "PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT DESIGNER“
• Teacher should teach pupils at school regardless
of their social class and should be wise in
handling the social class in the classroom
• For example, a teacher should ensure that their
students are placed in a group of students from
different backgrounds when doing a group
activity.
Classroom Authorities
• Teachers are well-versed in planning activities
that can be participated by all students in the
classroom and issues that have bias elements
to any gender should be avoided in order to
provide equitable education opportunities to
all students regardless of race and gender.
As Role Model
• Work ethics
– Teachers should not delay the time to start the lesson. Teaching
time can be used to maximize the activity of stimulating the mind.
– For example, teachers come early into the classroom, always
being fair and disciplined in any way.

• Communication skill
– Teacher only used the standard language when teaching so that
students will not become offended
– Teachers should also respect pupils, be fair to all, punitive
punishments should not be implemented because the teacher's
relationship with the pupils will spill out and eliminate the
students' interest in continuing learning.

• Clothing
– Books are judged by its cover. Teacher’s appearance will
determine their professionalism in the classroom. If the teacher
didn’t dress up properly, the students will not giving them full
respect.
Teaching Strategies
• The learning style of the students is different from
one another, so teacher cant only have one
teaching style only.
• Equity in education does not mean the same
delivery system is used for all students.
• Educational equality is more dependent on the
student's environment of living, family socio-
economic status and student learning styles. So
teachers need to study the socio-cultural
background of students so that teachers can
provide effective teaching activities according to the
students' ability.
An appropriate strategy is cooperative learning.
• Students can share their knowledge and
experience, learn together, help each other and
interact with one another.T
• Teachers can ask students to think about the
learning problems they encounter and the
activities they want to do together. Teachers
should always think of effective classroom
management methods.
Respect the student’s culture
• Sensitive issues relating to religion and race should
be avoided at all. Every trust and value should be
acceptable to every teacher. The planned learning
activities should lead to the involvement of all
students regardless of their race, cultural custom
and religious beliefs.
Use Bahasa Melayu as official language
• The use of standard language, the official
language of the Malay language, should be
used without the influence of dialect
language. This will give equal opportunity to
all students to participate in learning
activities.
Give equal opportunity to receive the same
education
• The school should provide the equal
opportunities and the same education regardless
of their culture and races. For example there
shouldn’t be the fixed quota for certain races,
the school should provide the scholarship to
those that are really qualified, not based on their
race.
Involved PTA
• Establish rapport with parents. Encourage them
to share about their cultures and experiences
with teachers.
• Let parents know that the teachers care about
their child, and suggest ways that they can help
their child succeed in school.
• Recruit parent volunteers. Explain the benefits
of their involvement and create a range of
volunteer opportunities.
Celebrate festival of different culture/religion
• This is to create an environment where a child
is comfortable in following the religious
doctrine of their choice.
• This is also to open up student’s mind about
other’s culture and to make them respect the
difference of other culture.
• The example of festival that can be celebrated
in school is Hari Raya, Chinese New Year,
Deepavali and many more.

Government Effort-Sekolah Wawasan
• Sekolah Wawasan is a primary school that
conceptualizes learning together in a single area
regardless of race or religion.
• Under this concept, two or three different
primary schools will be placed within the same
area.
• Each school will have its own building which can
be connected to each other using a link-way. This
concept is the effort to create a more loving
nation of Malaysia by uniting the school in a
uniform education system .
Why we should have Sekolah Wawasan ?

The school curriculum is expected to contribute
to the holistic development of the individual
(mental, emotional, physical, spiritual) by
imparting general knowledge and skills,
fostering healthy attitudes and instilling
accepted moral values. The aim is to produce
Malaysian citizens who are balanced, trained,
skillful and cherish the national aspiration for
unity
a) STANDARD CURRICULUM
In the classroom
• A wise approach should be used by not
distinguishing the student's social class.
• Students must be treated equally regardless of
whether they are from upper class or subordinate.
• Teachers should diversify their teaching methods
according to the level of students. This is
necessary to prevent students from getting bored
and subsequently resulting in difficult disciplinary
problems.
Outside the classroom
Provide the widest
opportunities to pupils to
engage in socio-cultural
activities according to
student choice based on
their interests and

Provide exposure to
students on important
issues pertaining to
national development
through community
service activities

Undertake and promote

the hidden talents of
students in the field of
culture and sports.
b) HIDDEN CURRICULUM
• The hidden curriculum includes the
values established by the school such as practices,
procedures, regulations, affiliations and structures
in schools.
• It is done indirectly as students learn the good
behavior of teachers, teachers exhibit moral
character, close relationships between students and
others. Values, norms, rules, intellectual and
whatever are brought into the school environment
will have an indirect effect but meaningful to the
student's life practice.
Co-curriculum
• Participating in co-curricular activities also allows
students to recognize and understand the cultures
and customs of other races in Malaysia.
• It can also create a sense of pride among students
with the culture and lifestyle of the people in this
country.
• By participating in co-curricular activities, a student
can be healthy and brain-educated and can build
self-confidence in life and this will indirectly reduce
the social phenomenon that involves students
because the student's leisure time has been filled
with beneficial activities.
